I watched the Takeover specials (and Arrival) before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
August 22, 2015 – Brooklyn, New York
Jushin Liger vs. Tyler Breeze
I’m going to ignore Triple H’s ego trip to start the show because Jushin fucking Liger is back in a WWE ring after a 28 year hiatus. The last time Liger wrestled on a WWE show, Breeze was 2 years old. The best thing about NXT being in a real arena is that the new hard cam position makes the show feel like a much bigger deal, even more than the larger crowd does. Breeze is a really solid hand, helping Liger put on a delightful opener, and I don’t understand why he hasn’t had more success on the main roster. ***¼ It’s truly one of the greatest tragedies in WWE. Breeze is an international treasure.
Simon Gotch & Aiden English def. Blake & Murphy [NXT Tag Team Championship Match] There wasn’t a video package explaining the build to this match, so I don’t understand who Blue Pants is or why she has an a capella version of the Price is Right theme as entrance music, or why Alexa Bliss hates her. I have a hard time getting excited about either of these teams, but the crowd ate this up and there’s plenty to be said for that. **¾ Aside from Blue Pants being the most over person in NXT, there really was no logical reason for her to be a part of this. Also, this match was a bit better than their match on the weekly show. I’m going to go ahead and bump this up to a cool *** because in context it was a lot more satisfying.
Apollo Crews def. Tye Dillinger
Uhaaaaaa! Dillinger controlled way too much of this, as Crews should have had a way more dominant debut. I’m not biased. * Dillinger was a weird for an opponent for Crews, as they were trying to get his new shtick over as well.
Samoa Joe def. Baron Corbin
I get that they’d invested a lot of time and squashes in Corbin, but he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a compelling headliner. And Joe is Joe. So just like in the last match, I think it was a mistake to have the new guy be on the defensive for so long. **½ They really didn’t use Joe well early on.
Bayley def. Sasha Banks [NXT Women’s Championship Match] Man, Bayley is just death on the mic, which is a shame because she is stellar in the ring. Seriously, why can’t the guys wrestle on this level as consistently as the ladies? These two, Charlotte and Becky Lynch are putting on just unreal matches every single time they’re given the spotlight and I love it so much. From the moment Sasha stomped on Bayley’s hand while in the Bank Statement, I was fully sold on this match. And then Charlotte and Lynch come out and pose like the Four Horsemen while Charlotte waves at her dad in the front row and this is basically how the Ghostbusters remake should have been written, more or less (probably less). ****¼ I have nothing to add, this was great.
Finn Balor def. Kevin Owens [NXT Championship Ladder Match] This is a rematch from the main roster Beast in the East Japan show in which Balor won the title. I’m just watching the Takeover shows and this is the first time I’d wished I was still obsessively watching all content related to the project I’m doing. So I paused this show and watched that match and it’s amazing, FYI. And then they went and said, “We have to top that match, and also the crazy good women’s match that happened on this show, so I suppose we’ll just have to put on one of the best ladder matches of all time.” And that’s exactly what they did. ****¾ Well, now the project I’m doing involves obsessively watching all things related to NXT, so I did a more full review of the Tokyo match. The Brooklyn match is still one of the top five matches in NXT history.
