“The sun’s a blazin’, the temperature is a raisin,” says Mauro Ranallo, who seems to have heat stroke.
Angel Garza def. Joaquin Wilde {Quarterfinal Match}
Seemingly nothing has changed about Wilde except for his name, so people can relax. We get little promos from each of the new guys before the match, which I hope continues and already makes me like this more than Damien Priest’s premier last week. Garza poses after a quick exchange here, but it works because he’s a cocky heel. Babyfaces, don’t do this please. This was a FANTASTIC way to start the tournament, I especially loved the way that Garza, who was in control for much of the match, had to transition from cocky and confident to serious and deadly the more he realized that Wilde was a threat. It was definitely better than the DJZ matches I’ve seen in EVOLVE. They really packed a lot into a seven-minute match. McGuinness: “If that’s the first match, what else do we have to look forward to in the NXT Breakout Tournament?” For once this kind of tired line sounds appropriate. ***½
We get a Kushida hype video, but no word as to who his next opponent will be. Then, Damien Priest finally gets to talk. After his match last week, he said that his name will live forever. I could have used a little more.
Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins def. Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler
I’m glad they got this out of the way here and weren’t tempted to put it on a Takeover. The commentators spent a lot of time jabbering about whether or not the titles were on the line here (the Street Profits said it was but there was no approval from the GM), but it didn’t end up mattering given the finish. This went just a couple minutes before Jaxson Ryker interfered and got his boys disqualified after it looked like they were doomed. Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan came out and saved the champs before letting them know that they owe them one now. *¾
Killian Dain is in a dark room watching disturbing footage. Presumably he’s coming back. Meanwhile, Aliyah & Vanessa Borne are still talking trash about Mia Yim.
Keith Lee def. Nykos Rikos
Rikos’ terrible gear is almost as distracting as Lee’s terrible entrance song. This lasted a few seconds, Lee looked good, and Rikos looked like he got his by a car. All good things. N/A
We get a look at Adam Cole’s appearances at the Download Festival and see that he defended the title over Dave Mastiff. That kind of wonks up the internal logic of both NXT and NXT UK but whatever, it’s minor. Next week, Cole’s buddy Roderick Strong will fight Tyler Breeze. Also, Cameron Grimes faces Isaiah Scott in the Breakout Tournament.
Shayna Baszler def. Io Shirai {NXT Women’s Championship Steel Cage Match}
This was the best match for this title during Baszler’s second title run. I was really irritated when the Horsewomen came out because it was feeling like the same old same old, but they were integrated into the match in a fun way and didn’t factor into the finish. Speaking of the finish, everything from Shirai’s moonsault off of the top of the cage onward was insane. The drama of the rush for the door, the brutality of the choke in the doorway, and the tragedy of Shirai costing herself the match due to bad positioning were all just brilliant. I really want them to get the belt off of Baszler, but at least my faith in this division has been restored. After the match, Shirai snaps and attacks Candice LeRae, though she seems conflicted about it. Who doesn’t love a slow burn heel turn? Oh, nevermind, she’s beating LeRae up with a chair now. Okay then. ****
