NXT UK 49

June 26, 2019 – Donington Park, Leicestershire

Travis Banks knows he’s the underdog against WALTER, but he’s prepared for the champ, just like the champ was when he went up against the former champ in New York.

Mark Andrews def. Joseph Conners
Conners the bore and Andrews the spark plug more or less split the difference and had a match that never really took off but never got boring either. Andrews’ stunner transition into the shooting star finish was pretty dope. **¾

As Imperium gets WALTER psyched up for his title defense, Dave Mastiff tries to motivate the Hunt to get back on the winning side of things.

The Grizzled Young Veterans come out with their shoes protected by plastic bags. They rip on the Download crowd and say that while they’ll reluctantly defend the belts next week, they won’t be bothering with this festival until then.

Piper Niven vs. Rhea Ripley is finally happening next week. The six-man tag between Dave Mastiff, the Hunt, and Gallus will happen in two weeks.

Xia Brookside def. Killer Kelly
This stems from Kelly abandoning Brookside to the dangerous Jinny & Jazzy Gabert a couple weeks back. The match was kind of crap, as they were mostly just killing time until Jinny & Jazzy came out to distract Brookside. The scheme didn’t work, as Brookside came back with a weak Codebreaker out of nowhere to win. *

Toni Storm thinks the new number one contender Kay Lee Ray might be all talk, but regardless the champ will be in non-title action in two weeks because the holder of the shiny shiny has her working boots on.

Ligero def. Noam Dar
I’m pretty impressed with Ligero & Dar here. Kenny Williams came out halfway through the match to sit at ringside and the crowd became silent waiting for him to do something. Even still, Dar & Ligero were able to get the crowd’s attention back through a really engaging rollercoaster of a match. In the end, Dar faked another knee injury and asked Williams for the chair, but ended up losing the match when Williams feigned giving it to him only to take it away. The final roll-up was a little trite, but that aside I dug all of this. ***

WALTER def. Travis Banks {WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
Given the multiple videos they devoted to this match throughout the show, I’m pretty surprised it only went nine minutes. Having WALTER be a dominant champion is fine, and sacrificing Banks to him ruffles very few of my feathers, I just kind of wish they’d lean in to how one-sided WALTER’s defenses will be and not make me expect matches like the ones we got during Pete Dunne’s run. That’s not to say this was bad (though the odd Download crowd didn’t do it any favors), it just felt like it ended just as it was getting out of first gear. I will say I am very glad that WALTER won without any help from Imperium. I will also say I have no idea what they’re going to do with Banks now. ***¼
