Adam Cole def. Carmelo Hayes
Cole had refused to choose an opponent for tonight, so Hayes forced it on him. He channeled John Cena’s debut against Kurt Angle, which came off as pretty cringey to me. On commentary, Wade Barrett tries to explain why Cole and Kyle O’Reilly’s traditional match at Great America Bash is going to be bigger than their unsanctioned match at Takeover, and that’s cringey too. I do believe the restrictions will make it better, but don’t pretend that this is escalation. And Vic Joseph, maybe don’t pretend the crowd is chanting things we can clearly hear they aren’t chanting. The action in the match itself was solid. Cole was kind of boring when in control early on, but they put together a bit of fun in the final minutes. Hayes’ selling is funny, and it’s good to see people work that hard to make the guy they’re fighting look strong. Cole hit the Panama Sunrise for the win at  8:51 (shown of 12:28). ***

Frankie Monet continues to hijack Robert Stone’s wrestlers away from him. Then, Zoey Stark says she has Io Shirai’s back because Shirai gave her a big break when she arrived. How does that make sense? They were booked against each other. We haven’t been told that Shirai requested to fight Stark. Wait, did we? Anyway, Shirai rolls up and says that even though they’re teaming tonight, she doesn’t like Stark. LA Knight also speaks.

Austin Theory & Johnny Gargano come out for a chat. Gargano wants to be NXT Champion again. Pete Dunne & Oney Lorcan don’t like that idea. The Way decides to walk away rather than fight (because Samoa Joe hates chaos), but Dunne catches Theory’s fingers and snaps them. Later on, we learn that Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher will get a shot at the tag titles at the Great American Bash.

Cameron Grimes arrives and gives money away to folks who are friendly to him and ask about Ted DiBiase’s status. Ari Sterling is rude, so Grimes lays him out. Then, William Regal tells Cole not to retaliate against Joe this week. Then, that battery is up to 31% charged. I guess they’re only charging it while the show is on the air. Then, the Way complains to Regal about Dunne. Gargano gives Regal a new pencil to make up for the one he broke last month. Regal books them in a tag match despite Theory’s broken fingers.

Zoey Stark & Io Shirai def. Aliyah & Jessi Kamea
I know it didn’t air on USA or Peacock, but it skeeves me out a little that this is a rematch from the Takeover preshow with Sarray just swapped out for Shirai. The Way ladies come out to watch from the ramp. I don’t like that people only rest against the middle rope in matches against people who use the tiger feint kick. I don’t mind when people who use that move put people in position to take it, but here (and often elsewhere) Kamea just took a break by resting there so that Shirai could hit the move. This was at its best when Stark and Kamea were allowed to show off. Shirai hit Kamea with the moonsault for the win at 6:10 (shown of 9:43). After the match, Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez and Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart come out and everyone wants a shot at the Way’s tag titles. Joe comes out and demands that security break it up. I like that Joe’s presence is felt throughout the show. **¼

Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory def. Pete Dunne & Oney Lorcan
I don’t know if they designed this match to get Theory over as a babyface, but if that’s what I wanted to do this is how I’d do it. He took a rough beating pretty much the whole time and wrestled the match mostly one-handed. This is the kind of tag wrestling I love, as the heelier heels did all kinds of great double team bastard stuff and the babyface-ier heels cleaned house in exciting ways. Gargano pinned Lorcan with the Final Beat DDT at 10:45 (shown of 14:17). After the match, Karrion Kross attacks Gargano and becomes the biggest heel in the building. I wouldn’t be mad at all at Gargano beating Kross for the title at GAB, though I’d prefer Dunne to get that spot. ***½

The battery is up to 41%, and then Joe lets Kross leave the building unscathed because he wasn’t personally provoked. Dunne walks up and stares at Joe again, and as far as I know they’re still staring at each other right now. Then we learn that the three teams that brawled earlier will have a three way tag match to determine the contenders to the tag titles at GAB. Later, Hit Row hijacks Bronson Reed’s interview to threaten him and MSK.

Frankie Monet def. Elektra Lopez
This started out pretty awkward, but turned into a nice example of what lady bruisers can do by the end. Monet got the win with the Glam Slam at 3:27. N/A

Top Dolla & Ashante Adonis def. Chase Parker & Matt Martel
Ever-Rise almost vandalized Dolla’s car earlier but got cold feet. Dolla & Adonis hit a scary elevated neckbreaker on Martel for the win at 2:35. N/A

Mercedes Martinez learns that she needs to find a partner for a mixed tag match against Tian Sha. Jake Atlas saves her from a Tian Sha attack. 51% battery power now, we’re in the green! My phone doesn’t get green until it’s at 80%, so this is an Android phone I guess.

Kyle O’Reilly def. Kushida
So, does O’Reilly get a shot at Kushida’s title now? Or is it so far beneath him that he won’t bother? Either way, this decision seems flawed to me. The match was incredible though. The crowd sucks, as usual, and didn’t give this the love it deserved. O’Reilly’s arm took a lot of punishment, but in the end he was able to wrap Kushida up in a roll up for the win at 10:53 (shown of 14:24). To the shock of no one, Cole attacked O’Reilly after the match. While that’s happening, Roderick Strong returns and attacks Kushida in the ring. He’s got Malcolm Bivens, Tyler Rust and Hideki Suzuki with him. They are Diamond Mine. Are they going to split up GAB into two weeks again? Because there are enough potential matches built up for that possibility. ****
