Oney Lorcan def. Austin Theory
After arguing last week, these guys brawled in the CWC earlier today. The crowd chants for Theory, which is the first time in a while that I can remember then cheering for any individual person. This did a few things: It let Theory show off, it gave Lorcan a rare singles win, and it gave a chance for two guys in the Takeover main event to scrap. That’s nice. The finish was the crazy tired Theory gets distracted by Johnny Gargano and Pete Dunne fighting on the ramp and walks into Lorcan’s uranage. That wrapped things up at 9:01 (shown of 12:38). **¾
LA Knight shows off his wealth while ripping on Cameron Grimes and flirting with chicks. Dok Hendrix gets us excited for In Your House. Later, the ladies of the Way have feelings about Poppy. Later still, Cameron Grimes reports in from his mansion too. It’s goofy and cute and I like it. Even later still, Breezango is ready for Imperium after Imperium’s recent propaganda video.
Legado del Fantasma is in the ring. Santos Escobar blames Bronson Reed for his boys’ tag title loss last week. Reed comes out to replay the clip of him squishing Escobar. MSK comes out to back Reed. They set up a winner-take-all six man tag for the North American and tag titles at Takeover. That should be good, and it’s a clever way to get more titles on the show. Hit Row comes out and stares down everyone. But that’s just teasing for Scott’s North American title posturing because he has a match with someone else tonight.
Isaiah Scott def. Killian Dain
This was the exact same deal as the last match. Scott got to show off (and win), Dain got a couple of good licks in, and then the finish was the loser getting distracted by fighting on the outside leading directly to the finish. How fucking lazy is this booking? Scott hit a running dropkick for the win at 6:25. **¾
Mercedes Martinez def. Camron Clay
Xia Li attacked Martinez before the match. But after the referees broke it up, Martinez insisted on doing the match anyway. She hit a Death Valley Driver for the win in 19 seconds. Does that make Martinez look strong or Xi look weak? Eh, who cares, it’s something I haven’t really seen before. N/A
Poppy dropped her album at the urging of Triple H and William Regal. Dexter Lumis rolls up and gives Poppy a sketch he did of her. She gives him a hug. Indi Hartwell sees this and freaks out. Triple H’s reaction is kind of fun, but as usual WWE doesn’t do comedy well.
Low Ki is now working for Ted DiBiase. Not really, but you look at DiBiase’s security guard and tell me he’s not related to Ki. It’s time for DiBiase’s priceless announcement. He tells Grimes and Knight that their Takeover match will be a ladder match. I’d love to figure out how many ladder matches this company does per year. It’s too many, whatever the number is. Grimes asks what will be at the top of the ladder, and DiBiase reveals the Million Dollar Championship. I know this isn’t a real title (and I know “real title” is an oxymoron) and I’d be surprised if this one is still on TV come the end of the year, but aren’t there enough belts on this show already? The title hilariously has a lineage section on its Wikipedia page.
Kyle O’Reilly and Karrion Kross have to be separated backstage. Later, Ever-Rise announces that they’re hosting the In Your House Pre Pre Show. Later still , Bobby Fish kicks a heavy bag and threatens Lorcan. Even later, Hendrix runs down the updated Takeover card.
James Taylor & Zack Gibson def. Ikemen Jiro & August Grey
JIRO! Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa watch this match from the ramp. The Grizzled Young Veterans win anyway, at 5:01, with the Ticket to Mayhem. They teased doing the same distraction finish here, but lol JK. Every match tonight has had interference. After the match, the GYV tell the fellas at ringside that they’re done with them and only want to fight for the tag titles. Ciampa says they have to go through them to get it. Next week, they’ll fight in a Tornado Tag match. Sounds dope. I wish they’d stop calling Ciampa “Old Man Ciampa” when he’s a year younger than I am. N/A
Candice LeRae comes out to complain about Poppy. She blames the InDex drama squarely on Poppy. Poppy replies by reintroducing us to Io Shirai. Shirai and LeRae fight. Hopefully this is leading to Shirai and Sarray giong after the tag titles. Shirai also bumped into Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez on her way to the back, so that might be something.
Ember Moon def. Dakota Kai
This is a rematch of that time that I was surprised that they brought Moon back to NXT to job to a bunch of folks. But as she has a title match on Sunday she gets her win back here. Moon hit a standing Diamond Dust in this match, so now I just wish she’d replace the Eclipse with that. After a match that was on par with their last one, Moon attacked Gonzalez on the floor. That led to Gonzalez returning fire in the ring and getting her buddy disqualified at 9:00 (shown of 12:31). Moon beats up Gonzalez after the match. ***
The five NXT Championship competitors meet in the ring in defiance of Regal’s demands that they stay apart. Well, Cole calls in on the big screen. The other four fight for a while, with each other and with security. Kross is the only one standing in the end, but then it turns out that Cole is there and he takes out Kross.
