NXT 612

March 24, 2021 – Orlando, Florida

Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez def. Io Shirai & Zoey Stark
Wade Barrett puts the upcoming Shirai/Gonzalez match in perfect context on commentary, saying that Shirai is better off beating Gonzalez in a title match now (thus shoving Gonzalez to the back of the line) given how rapidly Gonzalez is improving. We now know that the match will be the main event of Takeover Stand. This was good without ever really taking off. The commercial break came at a weird point in the match, leaving us without much left after the show returned. Gonzalez finished things big, booting Shirai while Stark was in her hands and then hitting Stark with the powerbomb for the win at 8:18 (shown of 11:54). Gonzalez powerbombs Shirai on the announce table after the match. ***

Yesterday, Adam Cole tried to attack Kyle O’Reilly at his MMA gym and got absolutely embarrassed by him. Roderick Strong approaches O’Reilly at the CWC and says that they need to kick Cole’s ass. O’Reilly rejects Strong’s help. Strong is hurt. Then, Jordan Devlin cuts a tweener (bordering on babyface) promo hyping his match against Kushida tonight. I am not happy at all that Kushida went from having the Match of the Year So Far to being a fluffer for the Cruiserweight Champion. Kushida cuts a promo later on, which helps balm the burn a little.

Bronson Reed def. LA Knight
Beth Phoenix goes full Yiddish on commentary talking about Reed’s chutzpah. I’m surprised by this result, but not mad about it. I’m especially not mad in the face of Knight being mostly boring here. The finish was great though, as Knight repeatedly tried to stop Reed from hitting the Tsunami, but fell to it at 8:37 (shown of 12:10). Maybe they’ll actually push Reed now. **½

Danny Burch was injured indeed by Karrion Kross last week (get Kross outta here!), so he and Oney Lorcan have vacated the tag titles. New champs will be crowned at Takeover Stand in a triple threat match that rightly includes MSK and the Grizzled Young Veterans, and also Legado del Fantasma are in it for some reason.

Karrion Kross def. Oney Lorcan
There is zero shine on Kross at this point. Getting rewarded for injuring one guy with a squash of his tag partner is pretty gross. Kross hit the elbow to the back for the win at 5:56 (shown of 9:18). Lorcan’s little comeback at the end was fun, but this was otherwise nothing. After the match, Kross says that Balor attacked Scarlett on purpose last week. Nobody on commentary calls him delusional. Dumb. Balor replies with a monotone promo. Snooze. **

NXT GM William Regal announces that next week there will be a battle royal to determine the participants in a Gauntlet Eliminator at Takeover Stand to determine that Dexter Lumis will face Johnny Gargano for the North American title at Takeover Deliver. He didn’t say that, but we all know it. Later, Gargano tells Regal he’s upset that he won’t know who he’s facing until the night before his match. Gargano was delightful in the segment.

WALTER def. Drake Maverick
Maverick stormed into Imperium’s locker room looking for a missing Killian Dain, so that’s why this is happening. WALTER knocks Maverick out immediately with a powerbomb, so when he puts on a half crab 23 seconds into the thing the referee has to call the match for him. Tommaso Ciampa comes out and challenges WALTER for a shot at the NXT UK Championship at Takeover. Imperium beats him up and WALTER rips off that necklace he always wears, but he also accepts the challenge. N/A

Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon def. Aliyah & Mercedes Martinez {NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Match}
Robert Stone paid his old friend Martinez to team with Aliyah because Jessi Kamea wasn’t cleared to work. They played things fast and loose here. Things were missing by a mile and felt really disconnected, even though the match was really short. My big problem with the Eclipse used to be how contrived the set up was. Here, the problem was that it missed by a mile. It still ended the match when Moon “hit” it on Aliyah at 4:02. In the back, Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell challenge the champs for the tag titles. *¼

Cameron Grimes suggests he and Strong team up to capitalize on the Undisputed Era merch money. Strong slugs him.

Jordan Devlin def. Kushida
This deserved to be so much better. They had a fine match, but didn’t particularly go nuts. And with good reason, because the finish was silly. Legado del Fantasma came out to distract Devlin. Devlin used Kushida as a weapon to distract them and then rolled him up for the win at 7:27 (shown of 9:37). Kushida attacked the flunkies while Santos Escobar stared down Devlin in the ring. Then, Shawn Michaels came out to suggest that the unification match be a ladder match. Sure, why not? **¾

On his way to the back, Michaels bumped into his son Cole and gave him a stern look. Cole and O’Reilly sit at a table on the ramp while Regal makes them sign a contract absolving NXT of responsibility for their actions in a match at NXT Deliver. O’Reilly still isn’t medically cleared, you see. Cole says he dumped the Undisputed Era because they were holding him back, and he realized it when sidekick O’Reilly was getting title shots and cozying up to Balor. Because that’s what sidekicks do. That’s pretty good. O’Reilly just wanted to be a better person, and he spends a long time making that clear. He also looks like a ghost under the bright lights on the ramp. Security keeps them from fighting.
