March 18, 2021 – Newham, London
Nathan Frazer def. Ashton Smith
Smith’s entrance music is so boring. They offer no suitable reason for Frazer to have changed his name. This was a decent power vs. flight fight. I like how much they played up the strengths they’d use against each other. I’m not sold on Smith being a singles competitor again, so I’m hoping this was a quick detour for him just to keep momentum behind Frazer. Frazer hit a frog splash for the win at 7:04. **¾
Ilja Dragunov apologizes for his recent behavior. Sam Gradwell interrupts and says he can beat Dragunov in any kind of a match, so Dragunov calmly takes him up on a No Disqualification match. I guess Gradwell won their last match by disqualification (or really reversed decision) when they met last and I just totally zoned out and didn’t register it. Then, Isla Dawn does spooky stuff. She and Scarlett have the same gimmick; Dawn’s just has a bit more of a J-horror vibe. Then, they announce NXT UK Prelude in three weeks. It’s not really made clear, but I suppose it’s like an hour long Takeover between NXT Takeover Stand and NXT Takeover Deliver. Johnny Saint announces that Tyler Bate and Noam Dar will fight for a shot at the Heritage Cup. I don’t know why but I thought Bate’s match against Mastiff was a de facto contender match.
Meiko Satomura def. Dani Luna
Satomura broke only a bit of a sweat putting Luna away, which I guess is good because I still don’t really understand what they’re going to do with her now that she’s so quickly lost to Kay Lee Ray. I’m holding out hope that they have plans to do something, anything with Luna soon. Satomura hit the Scorpio Rising for the win at 6:05. **½
Jinny and Joseph Conners complain that they only lost because Piper Niven illegally attacked Conners during the match. Conners wants a singles match with Jack Starz. Then, Luna is bummed but understands that it’s hard to beat Satomura. Flash Mandrews run up to give her some support. Later, Nina Samuels pouts and helps Xia Brookside with her workout. Samuels is being a baby, but I’m not sure how Brookside’s attitude helps her get over as a babyface. Later still, Kenny Williams apologizes for cheating to Amir Jordan by telling him that they have a tag title shot coming up. Jordan is stoked, but he doesn’t want them to cheat.
WALTER comes to the ring, either breaking quarantine protocols or the NXT/NXT UK timeline. He has defeated everyone, so he’s looking for a new challenge. Rampage Brown comes out, having recently beaten two guys that WALTER listed as big wins for the champion himself. Brown asks for a title shot and shoves WALTER to the mat. Rather than fight, WALTER backs off.
Jordan Devlin def. Trent Steven {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Who is ready for a forgone conclusion match? They built this thing up for two months only to have terrible planning with NXT flagship make the result here obvious. The match is pretty great in spite of the bad logistics. It almost hit that epic level, but despite the giant bombs and interesting counters there was something intangible missing. Probably crowd heat, which is weird because the people on-hand in the studio making noise during WALTER’s segment were almost entirely absent here. So weird. The finish in particular needed big boos from fans to work. Devlin poked Seven in the eyes, leaving him open for the Devlin Side and a 450 Splash to the back. That wrapped things up in the UK for Devlin at 17:39. ***¾
