NXT UK 136

February 18, 2021 – Newham, London

A-Kid def. Sha Samuels {NXT UK Heritage Cup Match}
A-Kid hasn’t defended this title on TV in over two months. I suppose two of those weeks were recap shows, but it’s no secret that the pace with which the various champions appear on the show isn’t great. Having the new HC champ going after the NXT UK title muddies things up too. That’s what happens when there are five titles on a one-hour show. Samuels abuses A-Kid’s arm to start and makes him tap to an armbar at 2:25 of the first round. Samuels dominated the second round until A-Kid caught him in a sleeper hold to wind him. A-Kid kept his distance and peppered Samuels with kicks throughout the third round, hitting a leg lariat to win the second fall at 1:23. Both guys get close-but-no-cigar in round four. Samuels was impatient in the fifth round and kept getting caught in armbars. A-Kid put him away at 1:25 of the round with his Rings of Saturn. This was a very good power vs. technique fight. I bought every ebb and flow in the action. I also bought a couple of Samuels’ near falls despite not thinking he had a chance in hell when this started. I very much liked the use of the round breaks here for Samuels to regain his composure and stop A-Kid’s momentum. ***¾

Ben Carter def. Josh Morrell
It’s interesting that Morrell is basically just a job guy, but he’s been allowed to show off quite a bit while taking his losses. If you were watching this in a vacuum you might now know that Carter is the one they’re going to push. Both guys looked great, moving fast, hitting hard, and flying with ease. Morrell got a crucifix pin near the end that was totally believable. Carter quickly followed that with a twisting suplex and a desperate frog splash for the win at 6:27. If Morrell keeps that up he’ll get a push of his own pretty soon. ***¼

WALTER has surpassed Pete Dunne’s longevity record as NXT UK Champion. He says that his reign will never end. At a press conference, Meiko Satomura calls Kay Lee Ray a lightweight for considering herself a champion before facing her. KLR agrees that if she wants to be the best, she has to beat Satomura. This was kind of nothing. The match happens in two weeks. Is anything scheduled for next week yet? Oh, I guess Xia Brookside vs. Nina Samuels is. I thought that was today. Earlier this week, Tyler Bate was seen continuing to train and soul search. I wonder if his search will cross Ilja Dragunov’s search. That’d be neat. Jinny wants to end things with Piper Niven. Whatever. Oh yeah, the tag title match for Pretty Deadly is next week too.

Dani Luna def. Aleah James
Luna and Zoey Stark, who had a similar match the night before, are pretty similar. Well, similar in that Luna and Stark are both strongwomen. It was different in that Stark’s match was intense and quick, while this was a step or two more clumsy and tentative. It wasn’t bad though, and James seemed just as motivated as Luna to show off. And unlike Stark with Valentina Feroz, Luna didn’t break James’s face. Luna beat James with a sit out powerbomb at 3:36. *¾

Rampage Brown def. Joe Coffey
The commentators talk a lot about these guys hitting each other in the liver, but the liver is only on the right side of the body and they’re hitting each other on the left almost every time. Anyway, this was fought at a good pace for a big boy brawl. Brown was kind of getting his ass handed to him in the second half of the match, and won in a more come-from-behind way than I expected. He avoided a Glasgow Sendoff on the floor, causing Coffey to injure his hand on the steps. Then, Brown bided his time and waited for an opportunity to attack the arm and hit the Doctor Bomb for the win at 11:15. Let’s have a rematch, eh? These guys have very good chemistry. Coffey shows brown respect after the match. ***¾

Great episode this week.
