Kyle O’Reilly starts the show to say he’s bummed that Adam Cole ruined the Undisputed Era on Sunday. Roderick Strong comes out instead to defend Cole. O’Reilly doesn’t want to hear it from Strong. Finn Balor comes out and wants to know if O’Reilly had anything to do with Cole’s attack. All three of them are attacked by Pete Dunne and the tag champs.
Santos Escobar is no-showing tonight because he doesn’t appreciate being forced into a match with Karrion Kross. It’s definitely not because he has COVID. No way. William Regal says he’ll strip Escobar of his title if he doesn’t show up and face Kross next week. He also makes a six-man tag main event.
Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon def. Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell
I feel like this is asking too much, but the fact that they’re continuing to put on women’s tag matches and the wording of the announcement of this match earlier in the day make me think that they might be shifting the women’s tag titles to NXT for a stint. I don’t think NXT needs it, but it’s something new and would validate the tournament. The bell for this match rang like 30 seconds before they threw it to a commercial. So weird. This match was pretty good, though I got a bigger kick out of Johnny Gargano on commentary talking about his search for Austin Theory as if Theory were a lost dog. Dexter Lumis’s murder van shows up in the parking lot, so Gargano leaves to retrieve Theory from it. The celebration distracts Hartwell though, and Moon rolls her up for the win at 9:33 (shown). This got absolutely gobbled up by commercials and the storyline, which is too bad because they were working really hard here. **¾
Pat McAfee calls in from a private jet to make fun of the fans for believing in Cole. It would have been nice for him to mention his friends Dunne and the tag champs. Then, Kushida says he’s not done with Gargano. Bronson Reed walks up to tell Kushida that he’s gunning for Gargano’s title too. He leaves and Malcolm Bivens walks up to as Kushida for a match against Tyler Rust tonight.
Leon Ruff def. Isaiah Scott
This turned into an interesting little bop. Scott got more and more frustrated that he couldn’t quickly put Ruff down. I’m not sure I understand the framing of Ruff as an underdog here as he’s already a lot more accomplished in NXT than Scott. But he’s little, you see. He catches Scott with a crucifix bomb for the win at 5:27. Scott beats up Ruff after the match. **½
Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro def. Aliyah & Jessi Kamea
I suppose the ladies tag belts might not come to NXT and this is just a way to get as many women some TV time as possible. I’m going to stick with my original hope. Both teams have matching gear! The KCs hit a neckbreaker/splash combo for the win at 2:36. Super short and totally fine. After the match, Xia Li smudges a black mark on Catanzaro’s hand and says she will hurt her next week. **
Beth Phoenix hosts the two teams that won the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic for a celebration in the ring. MSK come out first. They announce that they’ll get their tag title shot on March 3rd. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez come out next and are immediately confronted by Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax, the women’s tag champs. They half turn Kai & Gonzalez babyface here, focusing on Baszler and Kai’s rivalry from 2018. Gonzalez makes a requisite “hole” joke at Jax’s expense. I’m already beyond tired of that meme. They’ll fight on March 3rd as well. MSK holding the ropes for all four ladies and then excitedly eating popcorn and watching the drama with Beth Phoenix was terrific.
Strong and O’Reilly argue outside. Also, Cameron Grimes is still stacking money to the moon. Meanwhile, baby is building a tower into space. I wonder if they’ll run into each other. Earlier today, Toni Storm attacked Io Shirai during a photo shoot. Also, LA Knight said that NXT belongs to him and a bunch of other things. It’s hard to establish a catchphrase when you’re trying to establish every catchphrase. Later, Kross promises to beat up Escobar whether or not he shows up next week and whether or not he’s stripped of his championship.
Kushida def. Tyler Rust
The gimmick here is that Bivens thinks that Kushida would be easy pickings because of his long Takeover match. Kushida did a couple of his tricks before the commercial break, but things didn’t really kick into gear until after it. From there we got a few minutes of roller coastering from both guys, culminating in Kushida putting on the Hoverboard Lock and Bivens forfeiting the match on Rust’s behalf at 7:54 (shown of 11:13). Rust thinks he could have gotten out of it, but Bivens explains that he was protecting his investment. ***
Zoey Stark def. Valentina Feroz
Stark probably got the least ring time of anyone in the Dusty Classic tournament, so it’s interesting that she’s the first of the new recruits to get a match on NXT. The live crowd as it was seemed more into Feroz, but Stark beat the crap out of her and picked up the win with a flip into a knee at 2:32. I think she broke Feroz’s nose with a Bakatare Sliding Kick earlier in the match. N/A
Pete Dunne, Danny Burch & Oney Lordan def. Finn Balor, Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly
The match revolves around the lack of trust between Strong & O’Reilly. The most fun part of the match, unsurprisingly, was when Balor and Dunne mixed it up after the commercial break. That was rather brief, and the match was largely a backdrop to the overarching storyline. Cole came out to brutally attack O’Reilly, then left up the ramp. Strong came into the ring to help Balor, but Balor attacked him (without looking to see who it was). That left him discombobulated enough for Dunne to sneak in and hit the BItter End and pin the champion at 9:32 (shown of 12:02). Cole came back out and superkicked Balor after the match before posing with the championship belt. ***
