Nash Carter & Wes Lee def. Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza {Semifinal Match}
Legado del Fantasma did some great quick tag stuff, setting the team apart from the rest of the field. They looked at least as good as they ever have, but really they looked much better. There was that moment where Wilde almost crushed Lee’s chest in because a 450 splash ended with the latter’s knee hitting the former, but other than that this was great fun to watch. The finish felt a little bit tacked on, as Legado was firmly in control only for MSK to come back out of nowhere and hit the Hart Attack Blockbuster on Wilde for the win at 10:37 (shown of 13:59). ***½
Video package for Xia Li! Video package for Mercedes Martinez! Scarlett is in William Regal’s office asking for a match for Karrion Kross against Santos Escobar next week! I still don’t get why that feud is happening.
Xia Li def. Cora Jade
Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter are at ringside to tell Li that they’re worried about her. That does nothing to keep Li from squashing Jade. She hits the spin kick for the win in 47 seconds. Carter confronts Mei Ying and gets tossed off the ramp by Li. Li and Boa apologize to Ying. Ying chokes out Boa while Li tries to appease Ying by beating up Catanzaro. Did I mention that her name is Mei Ying and not Tian Sha? They’ve done a terrible job making it clear what name refers to what. N/A
The Way comes to the ring, led by Johnny Gargano in a wheelchair because of the pain he’s experiencing in his arm after Kushida’s attack last week. Yep. He’s pulling out of his Takeover match. Regal comes out to tell us that Gargano was medically cleared. Gargano tries to weasel out of it, but Regal says the only way out is to let Austin Theory defend the belt for him against Kushida tonight. Gargano balks as Kushida sneaks up on the Way and exposes the ruse. This was cute.
Shotzi Blackheart & Ember Moon def. Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell {Semifinal Match}
This was joined in progress. Blackheart got into a really nice groove as this match wore on, and I appreciate all the tandem stuff (and matching face paint) she and Moon put together. The Way had some nice teamwork going too, but I was less invested in that because it just made way more sense for Moon & Blackheart to win here. I found the finish hilarious; Moon hit LeRae (who wasn’t legal) with the Eclipse, and Hartwell human shielded herself for LeRae to take Blackheart’s diving senton (despite being legal) and took the pin at 10:43 (shown). I really like the Way’s dynamic of each Gargano having one stupid lackey that helps them except for when it counts most. After the match, Regal announces that the winner of the finals gets a shot at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. Good. ***¼
A Takeover NXT Championship video package! Later, Escobar says he isn’t afraid of Kross. Legado comes in and apologizes for losing. He doesn’t want their apology, but he wants them to make sure that Kross doesn’t make it to their match next week. That goes very badly for them. Later, a Toni Storm video package! Imperium video package! And later still, an Io Shirai video package! I love that they let her narrate it in Japanese as it allowed her to show off way more of her personality.
Kushida def. Austin Theory
This was kinda dull given who was involved, which isn’t surprising given that the finish was Gargano attacking Kushida and getting Theory disqualified at 8:40 (shown of 11:57). Gargano and Theory try to beat up Kushida after the match, but Dexter Lumis pulls Theory under the ring and then gives Gargano a scare. Kushida and Lumis put Gargano and Theory in submission holds to close the segment. **¼
Cameron Grimes is back, and he’s rich now. He’s driving a Lambo and handing out money to everyone (even the cameraman filming him). The second I saw him get out of that car I knew this would be a Game Stonk angle. His stocks went to the moon, you see. So now he’s a hillbilly Ric Flair who has enough money to tell Regal to kiss his grits. I don’t have a lot of faith that they have any idea where this is going since they have no track record of jumping on current events for storylines and this is clearly being booked on the fly.
James Drake & Zack Gibson def. Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher {Semifinal Match}
This was quite different from last week’s main event, as Ciampa & Thatcher were on defense this time around. It felt shorter and less consequential too. I picked the Grizzled Young Veterans to win the tournament from the beginning, but the tournament has done a better job of building the losers here than it has the winners. The Takeover match should be good either way, it just doesn’t feel as narratively satisfying. The Veterans pinned Ciampa with the Ticket to Mayhem at 9:08 (shown of 11:39). ***¼
