Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai def. Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro {Semifinal Match}
Gonzalez suggests that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic finals will take place at Takeover, which Vic Joseph then confirms. He also confirms that Takeover is called Vengeance Day. That’s not great. This was kind of a mess. The plan was good, but the execution of everything in the first half was very awkward. Points for breaking out a lot of new offense, but it a lot of it was clearly not fully baked. They got it together after the commercial break at least. And while I understand that they wanted to let the KCs shine, I think Gonzalez should be totally dominant in this tournament. Gonzalez killed Catanzaro with the powerbomb at 9:58 (shown of 13:03). **
Toni Storm calls Mercedes Martinez dead weight and promises to win the title in a week and a half. Also, Edge is here. Later, they hype NXT UK. Ilja Dragunov continues his climb to the top and his battle with rage, while Jordan Devlin puts his title on the line again. Later still, we learn about Tian Sha, Xia Li’s stable. It’s basically Game of Thrones in China. Maybe Tian Sha is the leader’s name. Anyway, she’s supposedly 1,000 years old.
Austin Theory def. Leon Ruff
This took a minute to get going, and then it became clear that this was set up so that the other semifinal match in the women’s Dusty Classic tournament could get some shine. Once all the secondary characters get ejected, Theory hits Ruff with a TKO (which he’s calling the ATL) for the win at 6:18. After the match, he goes to attack Ruff some more, but Dexter Lumis makes the save and pulls out a lock of Theory’s hair. I’m relieved that they’re keeping Lumis paired with Theory and away from the North American Championship. *¾
Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza def. Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado {Quarterfinal Match}
Wilde just had a baby! This was very fast paced and well executed. I could have stood to watch a few more minutes of this lucha-fueled high flying. Legado del Fantasma hit their Total Elimination type thing for the win at 6:41 (shown of 10:16). MSK come out after the match to run down Legado and give us a sense of their personality. Cool. ***¼
Pete Dunne and the tag champs come out to the ring. Dunne wants his title shot. Finn Balor comes out and dares the tag champs to let them face off one-on-one. They back off so Balor gives Dunne the title match at Takeover. Edge comes out (he just won the Royal Rumble, ya know) and takes the long road to suggest that he might choose this title to fight for at WrestleMania. I don’t think there’s one person who believes Edge is picking anyone but Roman Reigns to fight at Mania. Anyway, this didn’t work.
Johnny Gargano gets word that he’s defending his title against Kushida at Takeover. They wind up brawling in the hallway until Kushida injures Gargano’s arm. Later, Curt Stallion promises to make everyone in Texas proud. Also, Cameron Grimes is coming back next week.
Toni Storm nc. Jessi Kamea
The match goes 1:20 before Martinez attacks Storm and the whole thing gets thrown out. Io Shirai joins and attacks them both. N/A
Santos Escobar def. Curt Stallion {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Stallion won this title shot months ago on the 205th episode of 205 Live.
Scarlett watches the match from the balcony, because even though this match is almost three months in the making it’s still at risk of being overshadowed by Karrion Kross. At one point, Escobar hit a Muscle Buster, but the pace of the match was so slow it didn’t register as a near fall. If that’s how this is gonna go, why not just do the match back in November or December? They ramped up a bit near the end, but Stallion more or less got railroaded. Escobar hit the Phantom Driver and the gutbuster or the win at 9:54 (shown of 13:26). Kross beats up Legado after the match and tells Escobar he’s coming for him. This angle was set up in such a half assed way. And given the inevitable, why are they having their Cruiserweight Champion get rolled by a heavyweight? **¾
Outside, Kross warns Edge that he’ll be the champion come WrestleMania time and to keep that in mind. They’re not going to make good on any of this Edge stuff in NXT.
Timothy Thatcher & Tommaso Ciampa def. Roderick Strong & Adam Cole {Quarterfinal Match}
They really put Strong through the ringer here. Ciampa and Thatcher beat the hell out of him to the point that I’m shocked he didn’t get gassed. I was on board the whole match with the Undisputed Era’s fight from behind story, but then it turned out that wasn’t the story at all. I’m genuinely surprised that Ciampa &Thatcher won as it’s the Undisputed Era that currently has the issue with the tag team champions. But at least for this match, the result we got worked way better. Strong was broken down systematically, Cole was unable to really turn the tide, and Ciampa was able to capitalize on a period of chaos by hitting Strong with the Willow’s Bell for the win at 13:35 (shown of 17:05). Best tag team match in NXT in a really long time; since October if you count NXT UK, since last February if you just consider stateside NXT. Ciampa & Thatcher get into it with the Grizzled Young Veterans as the show goes off the air. ****
