Joe Coffey def. Sam Gradwell
This was better than I expected it to be, though I’m not sure why I overlooked it. There were several segments that built to this match, and both guys had reason to be motivated to show off coming into it. They worked a very snug, tough guy match that saw Gradwell draw blood from Coffey and Coffey hammer Gradwell’s previously injured leg to keep him from gaining momentum. Coffey hit AwRaBestFurThaBells at 7:02 for the win. ***
Kenny Williams and Amir Jordan challenge Jordan Devlin for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. Williams is injured so it’s a Jordan vs. Jordan match. Then, we get a really terrific retrospective of the WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov match. Please do a rematch. Then, Alexander Wolfe tries to cut a promo but Gallus’s celebration is too loud. Wolfe tells them to shut up and then rags on Coffey for getting cut open. Coffey reminds Wolfe that he owes him a beating for interfering in his match at Blackpool. The Gallus/Dragunov vs. Imperium storyline is the tightest storytelling in WWE since the height of Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa. I wonder if Gradwell will continue to be involved after Wolfe’s promo with him last week.
Lewis Howley & Sam Stoker def. Ashton Smith & Oliver Carter
Early on, Nigel McGuinness says that Stoker looks like Will Turner in Pirates of the Carribean. After that, all I could think about was that Howley looks way more like Legolas in Lord of the Rings. So it was a huge relief when McGuinness kept the bit up and called that out as well. And the match was the second in a row that far exceeded my expectations. Everyone looked like they were having a blast, putting on a really good match while utilizing all your favorite tag team tropes in between all the energetic action. Carter and Smith are wildly improved and Pretty Deadly has the tag team heel thing down. I’m really impressed. Stoker hit a European uppercut on Smith from the floor, giving Howley a chance at the winning pin (with a handful of tights) at 8:31. ***¼
Mark Andrews has a temper tantrum because of Eddie Dennis conniving and the Hunt’s betrayal. The double cross happened weeks ago, so I’m not clear on why Andrews is throwing furniture over it now. Flash Morgan Webster promises to break the Hunt. Then, the roster gushes over Rampage Brown’s debut.
Saxon Huxley def. Levi Muir
Huxley starts straight up HUSSing in this match, so McGuinness calls out the Nordic power that he’s channeling. Jack Starz runs out to cheer on Muir, but while it’s cute to see the brand’s jobbers sticking together, it’s all for naught as Huxley ends the squash with a lariat at 3:32. N/A
They hype the Heritage Cup finals with a nice video package highlighting the struggles both guys went through to get through the tournament. That’s happening next week. Devlin vs. Jordan will also be next week.
Kay Lee Ray def. Piper Niven {NXT UK Women’s Championship Falls Count Anywhere Match}
I was loving this until the finish. It played beautifully off of the faults of the first match by having Niven viciously attack KLR at every turn with whatever she could get her hands on. KLR used her cunning to try to sneak her way into control but was rarely able to. I even kind of liked that Niven had to fight off Jinny on her way to winning the title. But then she didn’t win the title because Jinny threw both women off of a trunk through a table and KLR just happened to fall on top for the win at 14:57. I just do not like the random happenstance who fell on top finish. But the rest of the match was a dope, hardcore fight. ***½
This was the best overall episode of this show since it’s returned, and one of the best overall episodes they’ve ever put on. It was such an easy watch, the matches were all entertaining, and a ton of storylines moved forward.
