NXT 592

November 18, 2020 – Orlando, Florida

Leon Ruff def. Johnny Gargano {NXT North American Championship Match}
They actually introduce us to Ruff via video package this time. That’s nice. I like Ruff. I don’t love all the lucha bouncing he does, but in contrast to what they allow the rest of the roster to do it’s refreshing. It rears its ugly head when he completely overshoots Gargano on a dive. Other than that, this was the match I wish they’d had last week. Ruff got to control with his different style, Gargano got to take over with moves he could never do to most of the roster, like a vicious powerbomb. And Priest’s interference was actually executed well this time. He hit Ruff in front of the referee deliberately to get Gargano disqualified at 4:52. Given the rules as they are it’s quite clever, but I wish they’d do the more logical thing and have interference cause a no-contest. **½

Cameron Grimes nc. Dexter Lumis {Blindfold Match}
I couldn’t understand for the life of me who the online fans are that gush over Lumis. So I did a deeper dive and it turns out it’s kids. Something bad getting pushed? It’s almost always because of kids. Vince McMahon is a kid, by the way. Grimes is feeling confidence because he’s learned that when he can’t see Lumis’s eyes he isn’t afraid of him. The blindfolds last about two minutes before Grimes mistakes the referee for Lumis and beats the crap out of him. The blindfolds come off, Lumis controls, and Grimes runs away at around 4:23. Grimes was funny as always, but this was pretty much nothing. *

Ruff overhears Priest calling him a joke to William Regal. Ruff slaps Priest with the support of Regal. If they’re not careful they might back into getting Ruff over.

Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell def. Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter
There’s gonna be a WarJames at the next Takeover! It’s team Shotzi Blackheart vs. Team LeRae. I don’t love this method of getting teams together for WarJames, though they did it with the women’s match last year and that resulted in one of the best matches of the year so what do I know? This was a fun sprint where everyone played their part well. LeRae pinned Carter with the Wicked Stepsister (curb stomp) at 4:31. **½

Kushida def. Arturo Ruas
I feel like I willed this match into existence, as earlier in the day Ruas just randomly popped into my mind while I was walking my dog. These two are well-matched; I just wish they’d get more time to go at each other. This was mostly on the mat with a few strikes thrown in. Kushida caught Ruas with a pin counter for the win at 4:25. **½

Ember Moon & Toni Storm vs. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez
Gonzalez has improved a lot in the last year, but she’s still taking bumps really softly, like a trainee. The rest of the match was fine, but like Storm’s match last week it felt rather slow. Storm caught Kai with a roll up for the surprise win at 8:28 (shown of 12:08). After the match, LeRae and Hartwell attack our heroes and feed them to Gonzalez. So that’s your evil WarJames team. **¾

Timothy Thatcher def. August Grey
Judging by Grey’s tights he won’t be changing his gimmick much. This was a neat little, squishy match. Thatcher mostly dominated, but there were signs of future fun from Grey. Thatcher put on a guillotine choke for the win at 4:26. Thatcher keeps attacking after the match, but Tommaso Ciampa comes out to set up a Takeover match. Thatcher wants none of it. I don’t care for Ciampa’s new t-shirt. **

Priest comes out for a match but he’s attacked by Gargano. Ruff joins the fray and winds up getting the better of everyone. I like Gargano’s Power Couple shirt, and this triple threat at Takeover could be just as cute. Later, Ruff tells William Regal tha the wants said triple threat.

They announce that Kevin Owens will be on guest commentary next week. Then we see the Boa/mystery man (now named Shifu) segment from last week. Regal showed up at Boa’s house last night. He has awful “tired” makeup on and warns that she (not Xia Li) is coming.

Io Shirai def. Rhea Ripley {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
I’m surprised that Finn Balor’s segment is main eventing instead of this match. This was a case of clipping helping the match, much of the entire commercial break was spent seeing if Shirai had a concussion. It appears she does not, so they were able to have a really good match. They kept it fairly simple, amped it up where they needed to, and brought it home in an interesting way. I’m pretty shocked that Ripley didn’t win the title. I’d expect her to move on to Raw or Smackdown, but both of those shows are really cluttered with less-than-stellar talent. Maybe they’ll shoot her to the top up there. I’m not sure there’s anything left for her in NXT. Shirai hit the moonsault for the win at 16:16 (shown of 22:04) after all but knocking Ripley out with a powerbomb through the announce table. ****

Balor comes out immediately after the match, only to be interrupted by the Kings of NXT. They want him to hand over the title or they’re going to put him out the way they’ve put out everyone else that’s been in their way. The Undisputed Era gets Balor’s back. It’s almost a shame that this is building to WarJames, because I’d really like to see Balor vs. Dunne.
