NXT 591

November 11, 2020 – Orlando, Florida

Leon Ruff def. Johnny Gargano {NXT North American Championship Match}
On Twitter, Gargano revealed a wheel (he loves wheels since he won Spin the Wheel, Make a Deal) he was going to use to decide his first challenger. I guessed that the wheel would be gimmicked to land on Austin Theory because they’d teased an alliance between Theory and Gargano. Well, now Theory’s name is comically covered up by Ruff’s name, and the joke is that Gargano gimmicked the wheel to land on him for the easy win to get over his zero successful defenses curse. Damian Priest showed up in the crowd but didn’t do anything. Gargano got distracted by jeering fans and Ruff caught him with a crucifix pin for the win at 3:36. Why not have Priest actually cause the distraction? That was super weird and makes Gargano look like a total loser. Anyway, I’m curious if the plan originally involved Theory, but this odd detour is one I’m interested in seeing play out. After the match, Priest gives Ruff cab fare so that Gargano can’t get to him. *½

Santos Escobar def. Jake Atlas {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Atlas earned this title shot by losing a non-title match to Escobar in about three minutes. Pretty dumb. Atlas attacked Joaquine Wilde in the parking lot as revenge for the attempted attack the week before. Fine. Safe to say that both of these guys are bigger than the wrestlers who just fought for the North American title. Weird. This match is also much slower than that match. Lame. Like what is the point of this title in NXT anyway? The match was alright, but nothing special. I did like the finish, as Escobar baited Atlas into going for the Rainbow DDT and then countering it to his butterfly gutbuster for the win at 11:44 (shown). ***

Dexter Lumis draws the zombie referee and Cameron Grimes running from him. Later, the drawing becomes collateral damage when Timothy Thatcher throws August Grey into it. Shotzi Blackheart does not do a convincing job of making me believe that her now destroyed tank was more meaningful than being just a toy. I actually find it a bit insulting that she’d say a gimmicky war machine would have emotional resonance because she has family in the military. Grow up, NXT.

Boa comes to the ring to tell Raquel Gonzalez that Xia Li isn’t here so there will be no match. Gonzalez beats up Boa. Then, an old (presumably) Chinese fella comes out to give Boa a letter in front of the dead crowd. I know that COVID-19 precautions screwed up what was originally planned here, but this angle is going nowhere fast.

Candice LeRae def. Toni Storm
This was kind of weird. I liked a lot of what they were doing on a technical level, but it felt like it was happening in slow motion. And then the finish to what should have been a dream match came way too early and felt like a total booger wipe when LeRae pinned Storm with her feet on the ropes at 6:39 (shown). Guess I’ll have to go back and watch their PROGRESS match at some point. Storm is pissed about the cheating and attacks LeRae after the match. The Scream mask chick and Shotzi Blackheart back up their respective friends, but the baddies come out on top. Scream mask reveals herself to be Indi Hartwell because duh. **¼

Dexter Lumis def. Timothy Thatcher
Thatcher forcing Lumis to sell made this one of Lumis’s easier to watch matches. Grimes interfering near the end, causing the distraction and allowing Thatcher to get a roll up at 10:16 (shown) made the whole thing feel like a waste of time. I mean, the match got built up by nonsense earlier in the same episode, so it’s not like we spent a ton of time on an angle (and the issue has been Lumis vs. Grimes anyway), but why have a Lumis match go so long and through a commercial if that’s where it’s ending up? Grimes puts Lumis’s head in a burlap sack after the match and beats him up. **½

Gargano admits to William Regal that he rigged the wheel, so he wants the decision overturned. Regal isn’t going for it. Then, Tommaso Ciampa says he’s going to change the culture of the NXT locker room. Then, they show a Prime Target segment for Io Shirai vs. Rhea Ripley. That match happens next week. Finn Balor will also be back on the show next week.

Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. Fandango & Tyler Breeze {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Before the match, we learn that Pat McAfee, Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch are  calling themselves the Kings of NXT and their motto appears to be “For the Brand.” This was a spirited little main event, but short. Why not give a few minutes from the Lumis vs. Thatcher match to this? Drake Maverick tried to even up the unfair numbers advantage, but Dunne took him out. Burch & Lorcan hit the elevated DDT for the win at 7:30 (shown). Breezango and Maverick get their asses kicked after the match. ***

It took me four days to get the motivation to finish this show. NXT is in a serious rut right now as far as I’m concerned. I’m hoping against hope that the women’s title match next week reels me back in.
