Kushida def. Velveteen Dream and Tommaso Ciampa {Triple Threat Match}
Dream’s arm is in a cast, I guess because of Kushida’s attack. And then Ciampa attacks Dream during his entrance. I figured this would be the same disappointing fare as the rest of the in-ring product of this feud as been, but it wound up being a damn good triple threat match! Nice escalating action at a really fast pace. What more can you ask for from a TV opener? Plus, Kushida gets a pinfall over a former NXT Champion, which is a step in the right direction for him. Dream hit Ciampa with his cast while falling off the apron, allowing Kushida to hit Ciampa with a German suplex for the win at 12:12 (shown). ***½
Adam Cole calls in on a tablet while the rest of the Undisputed Era stands around his virtual body. I’m getting Demolition Man boardroom vibes here. Bobby Fish & Roderick Strong promise to win the tag titles tonight. Strong sort of rips off Erick Stevens’ old choo choo catchphrase.
Ember Moon def. Jessi Kamea
This was your standard issue squash. Moon pulled on Kamea’s pigtails to get her in an elevated STF for the win at 3:59. Dakota Kai attacked Moon after the match. N/A
Backstage, Fish has been attacked and injured. He didn’t see who it was. This is a VERY OVERUSED TROPE ON THIS SHOW! And on NXT UK for that matter. I’m very sick of it. They announce a bit later that Kyle O’Reilly will take Fish’s place.
Bronson Reed def. Austin Theory
Reed’s new entrance music is a terrible, terrible rip off of Lose Yourself. Just awful. Good thing his entrance video still rules. Reed put Theory away quickly with the Tsunami at 3:29. Theory pitches a fit and demands an immediate rematch. *
Bronson Reed def. Austin Theory
Reed hits a Samaon Drop for the win in 16 seconds. I’m not sure what they’re going for with Theory, but I do find it interesting that the folks who were accused in #SpeakingOut that remained on TV have been losing a lot. I’m not sure it’s meaningful, but it’s interesting. N/A
A worried Xia Li says that it’s very important that she win in her match tonight. Then, Theory straight up quits and leaves the building. Look for Johnny Gargano to bring him back in a couple weeks.
Joaquin Wilde, Raul Mendoza & Santos Escobar def. Jake Atlas, Isaiah Scott & Ashante Adonis
They went for it with some chaotic stuff near the end here, but I wish just once they’d let these guys really let loose and do a Dragon Gate style six-man spotfest, just to change things up. I feel like given the fundamentals that get drilled into them so much they could do something really cool with it. Interesting bits here were the somewhat sloppy car crash spot from the apron, Atlas hitting Escobar with the Rainbow DDT on the floor, and Wilde & Mendoza finishing off Mendoza with a legsweep/face kick combo at 11:20 (shown). ***
The Garganos set up a mini practice Spin the Wheel, Make a Deal wheel at home. Johnny wants a Coal Miner’s Glove match, but he keeps landing on matches that would end with him being buried or stuck in a casket. Candice is less worried because she’s undefeated in street fights, and most of the matches on the wheel are just dressed up street fights.
Matt Martel & Chase Parker def. Killian Dain & Drake Maverick
Dain makes them cut off the cutesy entrance music again. This took a turn I didn’t expect, which is good. Dain was in Parker’s half crab in the ring while Martel screamed at Maverick that they were both losers and had no other friends. Maverick snapped and took out both guys with a chair and got disqualified at 2:54. Nothing as a match, but good character progression for Maverick. Maverick assumes that Dain will be mad because they lost, but rather he thinks it was awesome that Maverick went wild. *
Roderick Strong has been attacked backstage. O’Reilly forfeits the match to Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch. They recommend that one of them tag with O’Reilly, but he wants to be with his injured friends. Breezango agrees to the new match.
Katy Catanzaro def. Xia Li
Li got almost no offense here, though it was a decent little showing for Catanzaro. Catanzaro got a roll up for the win at 2:27. I know that next week is a big show with more substantive matches and probably no squashes, but this is a lot of mini matches for one episode. Li beats up Catanzaro and Kayden Carter after the match. And then because this angle doesn’t really matter, Raquel Gonzalez comes out and takes out all three of them before cutting a promo on Rhea Ripley. *
Cameron Grimes is confident about his match against Dexter Lumis next week until he learns that it will be a Halloween House of Terrors match. Grimes is always a good time. Lumis stares at him from behind a door.
Thatch As Thatch Can is live in the ring this week. Anthony Greene is Timothy Thatcher’s student. Greene gets upset at the liberties that Thatcher takes with him and shoots on his teacher. Now Thatcher wants a match, but he starts it with a sucker punch.
Timothy Thatcher def. Anthony Greene
Thatcher wins in 55 seconds with a half crab. I’m not mad at them using this recurring segment to debut Greene. N/A
Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. Fandango & Tyler Breeze {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
This was a pretty standard tag match, not really befitting the main event. A dude in a Daft Punk-esque mask came out at the end and threw Fandango off the top rope. Burch hit Breeze with a low blow and then he and Lorcan hit the elevated DDT for the win at 10:19 (shown). The mystery man is revealed to be Pat McAfee. This is a better spot for McAfee than challenging Cole to a 50/50 singles match as his debut on Takeover (though that match was good outside of the finish). And it’s really nice to see Burch and Lorcan finally get some gold. I hope that since there was an actual angle around the switch there will return to at least a fraction of the prominence they had the last few years. My only issue here is, what if O’Reilly had agreed to tag with Lorcan or Burch. You could assume that O’Reilly would have been mysteriously attacked as well, but if that’s the case then that’s probably the way they should have gone. **¾
