NXT UK 118

October 15, 2020 – Newham, London

Dave Mastiff def. Joseph Conners {Quarterfinal Heritage Cup Rules Match}
Unlike other tournament matches, Mastiff just dominated Conners with his usual in the first round. The second round was more of the same. In 36 seconds of the third round, Conners tries to slap Mastiff and gets knocked out cold for his trouble. Knockouts equal automatic wins, so Mastiff takes this one. This was booked correctly, but didn’t translate into an exciting match. **

Jordan Devlin, still being called the NXT Cruiserweight Champion, gets a video package. I did NOT expect him to come back. He’s mad that Santos Escobar is being called the champ in the United States. He calls it a replica title. I like the storyline, but I’ll be fascinated to see if fans accept Devlin after he got named in the Speaking Out movement. I will say, I really like that Devlin called out how they quickly and without explanation stopped calling Escobar’s title the interim title. Then, Ashton Smith and Oliver Carter take the piss out of each other. We find out that Carter will fight Eddie Dennis next week.

Piper Niven def. Isla Dawn
This is happening because of the weird segment that closed last week’s episode. Apparently these two collided during the brawl. Eyeroll. Nigel McGuinness says on commentary that Niven was the first Scot to ever main event Korakuen Hall. That’s a great bit of wrestling trivia. I did not like this. The bulk of the match was Niven dominating with nothing interesting at all. At one point, Niven walked all the way across the ring just to stand in place for Dawn to hit her with a Meteora. Just dreck. Niven came back with a cannonball and Michinoku Driver for the win at 8:18. This should have been a few minutes shorter and way more of a squash for Niven. Also, I can’t even look at someone doing a cannonball now that I’ve seen Shigehiro Irie do it properly. *¼

Kenny Williams loves tacos and Amir Jordan is helping him train for the Heritage Cup Tournament. The UK Performance Center looks pretty sick. Then, they tell us Flash Morgan Webster isn’t cleared to compete after last week’s attack. The shift in Andy Shepherds tone when going from that to a profile on Trent Seven is so jarring that it almost has to be deliberate.

Ilja Dragunov & Pete Dunne def. WALTER & Alexander Wolfe
Dunne spent his time off sculpting himself a swimmer’s body. He looks great. This match ruled over my entire being for almost twenty minutes. I don’t know if it’s because I’m starved for good tag team wrestling (NXT sure as hell hasn’t been delivering it though there have been a few bright spots in this department in AEW) but I was totally sucked into the babyface superteam dynamic here. WALTER was, as usual, a force of nature and Dunne could only do so much to keep his old foe from putting away the plucky new contender. I think this would have been even better had WALTER won, putting Dragunov’s ability to beat him in doubt. They went the other way and had Dragunov pin WALTER (the first time that’s happened in NXT UK) with the Torpedo Moskau at 19:04. They want us to check back in two weeks to see a title change because the momentum is on the challenger’s side. I find that story less compelling than the one where Dragunov overcomes a seemingly impossible obstacle, but it didn’t hurt for me what was otherwise an incredible tag match. ****
