NXT Super Tuesday

September 1, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida

Isaiah Scott, Tyler Breeze & Fandango def. Santos Escobar, Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde {Street Fight}
This was some chaotic fun until it got dumb. There were spots that made zero sense, like Mendoza throwing Scott’s leg into a kick on Escobar. Why would he do that? Was that spot meant to be something else? Imperium attacking Breeze stopped the match dead in its tracks and added nothing, though it did lead to a Lucha Underground style stunt dive. Why was the forklift there though? Scott pinned Escobar with the JML Driver at 8:16 (shown of 11:52). I guess we’ll get that rematch after all. **¾

They show more of Tegan Nox’s side of the issue with Candice LeRae. She says LeRae doing things the Gargano way isn’t the LeRae she knows. These have been rather poorly produced, as the music and quick cuts make it really hard to feel connected to the issue. The fact that the whole thing has taken place only in these video packages doesn’t help.

Candice LeRae def. Kacy Catanzaro
This was quick and dirty and ended when LeRae hit Catanzaro with the Super Dragon Curb Stomp at 3:01. After the match, LeRae finally brings the Nox situation to the ring. She says that Kayden Carter & Catanzaro’s friendship makes her jealous and that it reminds her of what she used to have with Nox. She tells Nox to come to her house so they can talk it out. *¾

Rhea Ripley challenges Mercedes Martinez to a Steel Cage match. Later on, Martinez accepts. It’ll happen next Tuesday. I guess it’s not also Super Tuesday (later on they call it NXT Super Tuesday 2). I feel much more connected to this rivalry than the LeRae/Nox one.

Timothy Thatcher def. Bronson Reed
Reed’s new entrance video rules, as does his One Man Gang-inspired singlet. Before the match, Wade Barrett says, “This one is going to hurt.” I hope he’s not predicting a clash of styles and saying the quiet part out loud. They actually leaned more towards Reed’s comfort zone than Thatcher’s and that worked out. Sadly, this was super short and ended when Thatcher tapped Reed to a Fujiwara armbar at 4:47 after Austin Theory interfered. **

Finn Balor and Adam Cole def. Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano {NXT Championship Four Way Iron Man Match}
They probably should have waited two weeks to turn Ciampa heel so that this match would have just one babyface. They also list his career highlight as being a victorious WarJames captain. Hey, remember when he was NXT Champion for over 200 days? Dumb. There’s no word on what will happen if there’s a draw. This also isn’t using tag rules, so the two-in-two-out stretches (which was basically the first half of the match) were often unconvincing. Even after short bursts with all four guys, two would magically melt away afterwards. About twenty minutes into the match they teased a Bullet Club vs. DIY breakdown, but then Balor turned on Cole because why should they give the fans something they’ve been asking for all week? Balor got the first point by pinning Cole a couple minutes later, so at least it wasn’t for nothing. Gargano stole a pin on Balor from Ciampa to win the next fall about 34 minutes in. Cole hit the Panama Sunrise on Gargano a couple minutes later for a point. Ciampa hit Cole with the Fairy Tale Ending for a point two minutes after that. So now everyone has a point and everyone but Ciampa has been pinned. Things were starting to get quite interesting toward the end, as Cole injured Ciampa’s leg and everyone zeroed in on it. There was some scrambling for a tiebreaking pin as the time limit started expire, which saw Balor hit the Coup de Gras on Ciampa and Cole hit the Last Shot on Cole to tie the match at 2-2-1-1. 44:17 was shown of the hour.

Five commercial breaks is actually fewer than I expected, but they bafflingly went to the last one with less than seven minutes left in the match. The match was good, but certainly not great. There wasn’t much of a story outside of four bad guys wrestling a long match. There weren’t any interesting alliances or betrayals. I’m kind of confused at why the match was laid out in such a basic way. That said, the action was consistent, which you definitely want in an hour-long match. You also want drama, but NXT hasn’t served much of that up during this pandemic. A definitive winner would have been nice too, but I’ll take a draw between two guys over a four-way tie. William Regal runs out after the match and says that next week Balor and Cole will fight in a one-fall match for the title. ***¾
