NXT 576

August 12, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida

Vic Joseph is on commentary with Beth Phoenix and Mauro Ranallo! I’m so stoked!

Karrion Kross def. Danny Burch
Burch is looking a little soft, but it’s probably hard to work out when you’ve had Coronavirus. After a little bit of swift stiffness, Kross won with the Kross Jacket at 4:01. After the match, Keith Lee storms out with a contract for a match at Takeover. He begged Regal for it, and now he wants Kross to sign. Kross does, but when Lee goes to look at it a fireball explodes in his face. Kinda weird, but better than them just staring at each other which is what I thought this was going to be. That said, I hate that the commentators just stop talking during segments like this. There’s no crowd, we need your commentary! **

Killian Dain nc. Drake Maverick
Good thing they brought Maverick back so they could… have him have a nothing match with Dain while the real focus was on Lee suffering the effects of the fireball in a split screen. Lee leaves in an ambulance as the Undisputed Era arrives. Oh, there’s a match going on? Oh, not really, because the UE runs out and beats up both guys at 1:38 (shown). Three-fourths of the match happened during the commercial break. N/A

Adam Cole runs down Pat McAfee, calls him a coward for attacking him with his hands behind his back, and reminds everyone that he’s the longest reigning NXT Champion of all time. He wants McAfee to show up next week for reasons, and they’re having a match at Takeover. Who is supposed to be the heel here? This wasn’t a babyface promo at all. Lame all day. Apparently McAfee said, “I’m going to dance on the grave of NXT,” on his podcast. Talk about saying the quiet part out loud.

Santos Escobar def. Tyler Breeze
Last week it was Colt Cabana on AEW Dynamite and this week it’s Breeze; wrestlers be cupping these days. After a short and uninspiring match, Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde distracted Breeze long enough for Escobar to hit the Phantom Driver at 4:18 (shown of 7:51). The wrestling has been poopy on this episode so far. Fandango-in-a-sling and Isaiah Scott make the save. *½

Dakota Kai says she’s gotten to where she is by herself and is ready to beat Io Shirai at Takeover. If this wasn’t designed to have her feud with Raquel Gonzalez when she returns from her COVID vacation then they’re screwing up.

Mia Yim def. Indi Hartwell
Yim tells us that her boyfriend doesn’t have any serious burn damage from the fireball. Do they do more cuts during women’s matches? I think the average time for holding a single shot in this match was 1.5 seconds. Hartwell is not ready for prime time. She doesn’t sell and looks awkward most of the time. Yim won with an armbar at 4:36. The story was meant to be that Yim was so distracted by Lee that it affected her performance, except that it didn’t at all. *

Finn Balor cuts an annoying promo talking about the ratings and saying that he’ll beat whoever loses but doesn’t get pinned in tonight’s main event when they fight in a second chance match next week. Blah.

Bronson Reed def. Damian Priest
Well, they went with the more interesting result, that’s for sure. I think even more now that Priest is winning the ladder match. This started slow but wound up picking up pretty nicely. I liked that Priest had to fight for every throw, only to have Reed respond with ease when he went for one. The finish was kind of botched, at Priest was meant to avoid the Tsunami and go for the Reckoning but he didn’t get out of the way enough. You’d think one of their million cuts could have covered for it. Reed got a surprise roll up for the win at 9:57 (shown of 11:26). ***

Shirai reminds us that Kai is the same woman who was terrified of Shayna Baszler. She is no match for the Genius of the Sky. This is the only match I’m looking forward to at Takeover.

Mercedes Martinez & Aliyah def. Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter
Stone tells Catanzaro to ditch Carter and join him, but she stomps on his foot instead. The dynamic of Martinez being annoyed by Aliyah’s affection is less cool than the dynamic of Aliyah and Stone just not knowing what to make of Martinez. This match was actually kind of fun. It was fast paced and didn’t overstay its welcome. Martinez hit Catanzaro with the Air Raid Crash at 4:20 (shown of 7:51). Rhea Ripley attacks Martinez after the match, and Shotzi Blackheart does the same to Aliyah. This is a duo I can get behind. **¼

Johnny Gargano & Candice LeRae let us into their home again. LeRae reads a story to her pet dog and wants Tegan Nox to mind her own business. Gargano does house work from the top of a ladder and talks about how he’ll win the ladder match at Takeover after he beats Ridge Holland next week. They still have the photo of Doc Hendrix up on the wall. These segments always deliver.

Thatch as Thatch Can is back. He goes over how he would have won two weeks ago in a triple threat had Dexter Lumis not been there. The guy he puts the hold on is helpfully wearing a Balor shirt. Next week, Breezango & Scott take on Legado del Fantasma.

Kushida def. Cameron Grimes and Velveteen Dream {Triple Threat Semifinal Match}
I actually didn’t see Dream as the mystery wrestler coming. Another shorty tonight, but this was good frantic triple threat fun. Grimes winning and pinning Kushida is the least interesting result, so that’s a bummer, but I did enjoy how they got there. Grimes hit the Cave In at 6:25 (shown of 8:55). So it’s Balor vs. Dream joining Gargano vs. Holland next week. After the match, Dream beats up Kushida. I guess he’s a heel now. ***

Pretty weak show this week all things considered.
