NXT 561

May 6, 2020 – Orlando, Florida

Johnny Gargano def. Dominik Dijakovic
Gargano’s got some epic new heel entrance music, but it’s going to take some getting used to. Well, it starts out epic, then starts to sound like Jack Gallagher’s theme slightly remixed. As far as crowdless matches go, this one was pretty solid. Gargano looked really small compared to Dijakovic, but won with the slingshot DDT at 11:26 thanks to a bit of distraction by Candice LeRae. ***½

Imperium formally challenges for the NXT Tag Team Championship. I guess they’re pretending that they don’t have an issue with Finn Balor for now.

Akira Tozawa def. Jack Gallagher {Group B Round Robin Tournament Match}
This was fun while it lasted, but it really didn’t last long. They had a great exchange on the apron that was followed immediately by Tozawa hitting a diving senton for the win at 3:46. So Tozawa is at 2-0 and Gallagher is unable to win the block as he’s at 0-2. Tozawa only has El Hijo del Fantasma left to battle. **

Chelsea Green def. Xia Li
Very quick squash here, which Green won with the I’m Prettier at 1:17 when Aliyah distracted Li. I don’t think anyone feels the need for another Li vs. Aliyah match. Robert Stone helps Aliyah up after the match. N/A

Karrion Kross def. Leon Ruff
Cross and Scarlett are collectively called Doomsday. They’ve got one of the more memorable new entrances since Aleister Black, but I could be comparing the two because they’re both in black and white. This one has Scarlett lip syncing to the music, so that’s new. Can’t say they’re not giving them a full on push. Ruff, who they wisely didn’t waste time giving an entrance, gets fully squashed. I do hope one day Ruff gets a real run in the cruiserweight division. He’s pretty good, and his girlfriend was the referee! Cross won in 56 seconds with a rear naked choke. N/A

McKenzie Mitchell interviews Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher about Imperium’s attack and challenge. Thatcher wants Riddle to knock them out so he can tap them out. Mitchell doesn’t say more, probably because the interview isn’t about football. The tag title match will happen next week. Did they decide that Indus Sher wasn’t ready for TV?

Io Shirai def. Charlotte Flair {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Right off the bat, I like that Flair went back to her original NXT run offense to fight Shirai here. They also made good use of the size difference. I also liked that Flair got more worried about Shirai’s ability to win as the match wore on. Sadly, she became too concerned and we got a boner of a finish as Flair gets herself disqualified with a kendo stick at 7:09. Rhea Ripley returns to stop Flair from abusing Shirai more after the match. Shirai doesn’t exactly thank her, and they fight later on outside the building. This is the match I want. ***

Kushida def. Jake Atlas {Group A Round Robin Tournament Match}
Much like the other tournament match on this show, they packed a lot into a small amount of time. Kushida’s gimmick in the tournament is that he’s pulling out very effective submission counters and winning with them. Here he caught Atlas in midair and put on a cross armbreaker at 3:04. He’s now 2-0 and Atlas is 1-1. It feels like they’re building to Kushida vs. Tozawa, so look for a curveball in one of the blocks. **¼

Finn Balor comes out to shift his focus for the second time in as many months. I like that he’s cutting his promo from a podium on the ramp rather than the ring. There’s no crowd, why shlep all the way into the ring? He apparently doesn’t know who attacked him though, so what the hell is this promo? He says the person who attacked him will get squashed, not pushed. I’m not a fan of work-shooty, jargon-filled promos like this. I hope very much it’s Imperium who attacked Balor, because otherwise his trajectory feels all over the place.

Cameron Grimes def. Denzel Dejournette
Grimes wins in 24 seconds with the Cave In. So many squashes tonight. After the match, Grimes grabs a microphone and says that he wishes he’d been the one who attacked Balor, but someone beat him to it. Balor returns and beats up Grimes. They’ll have a match next week. N/A

Adam Cole def. Velveteen Dream {NXT Championship Match}
I’m not at all surprised they didn’t move the title here. Without a crowd the title change would feel flat, and Dream has some uncomfortable allegations staring him down. They didn’t bury Dream, so I don’t think he’s on the chopping block just yet, but it was smart not to make him the champ when he’s under this kind of scrutiny. The match was alright, though the finish was weak. The Undisputed Era came out to interfere, but Dexter Lumis had been hiding under the ring the whole time and stopped them. But the referee got knocked out and couldn’t count after the Purple Rainmaker, and then Cole hit the Last Shot for the win at 7:47. The commentators suggest that the feud will continue, so it seems they’re waiting to see how the Dream stuff plays out in real life. **¾
