NXT UK 94

Tom Philips just couldn’t leave well enough alone and had to host an episode of NXT UK too. WE GET IT TOM, you’re everywhere. The brand is finally using these filler episodes to play previously unseen dark matches.

June 14, 2019 – Donington Park, Leicestershire

Toni Storm def. Deonna Purrazzo {NXT UK Women’s Championship Match}
The commentary is new, but they play it as if they were doing it at the time. Philips & Andy Shepherd both sound like they’re there live, which is impressive given that they were clearly calling this from separate rooms on opposite sides of an ocean. It’s bad to look a gift horse like having a crowd in the mouth, but the fans at the Download Festival last year were notoriously quiet. Still, the match was alright, with Purrazzo playing de facto heel against the popular Storm. The back nine was actually quite good, as all of Purrazzo’s arm work led to her going for her amrbar finisher after avoiding the German suplexes that had hurt her earlier on. I miss the version of Storm that looked like she was having a good time. I know dour Storm was part of the story, but it just wasn’t fun. Eventually, Storm had enough and just hit Purrazzo with a clothesline and the Storm Zero for the win at 11:14. ***

Matt Riddle def. Ligero
Summer of 2019 saw a lot of NXT flagship talent coming over to the UK and doing dark matches, and I’m not sure why. I guess to boost the gate. Riddle gave up a lot for Ligero here, and the result was a fun bout that got the crowd pretty hyped. Much like the last match, Riddle eventually just decided it was time to win and hit three moves, capping it off with a twisting Broton, to put Ligero down at 8:28. Match was fun, if inessential. The commentators’ suggestion that Ligero trains so much that it leaves no time for sleep might be the reason he loses so much. You gotta get your eight hours, man! ***

Shayna Baszler def. Isla Dawn {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
It’s an Isla Dawn match that isn’t totally mat-based, nothing to get excited about. That it was for the title was some house show nonsense, which I feel bad pointing out because this was never meant to air. This was pretty much an extended squash. Baszler won in 8:39 with the Kirafuda Clutch. **

March 6, 2020 – Coventry, West Midlands

Ilja Dragunov def. A-Kid
Shepherd interviewed number one contender Ilja Dragunov on Zoom (I assume) before this match. Dragunov said he hopes WALTER will underestimate him and that the match will redefine violence. I look forward to it… in October? This is from the most recent tapings and was likely going to air on NXT UK proper if they hadn’t decided to postpone Takeover: Dublin. I could be wrong but I think this is Kid’s longest match yet in NXT UK. One flubbed spot aside, this was a good time at the matches. Every time I thought it had reached its peak, it escalated more. Dragunov fought the whole match to hit a diving senton, and after finally connecting with it he hit the Torpedo Moskau for the win at 13:15. ***¾

The graphics seemed to tease Riddle vs. Dragunov, which they do have in the can, but that wasn’t the case. Here’s hoping we get it on one of these dark match shows soon. Though with Dragunov being the number one contender, maybe they don’t want to show him losing right now. Maybe they can have him do another cyber interview during which he can say he saw the match as a learning opportunity. I don’t know, I just want to see that match. The commentators give no hints as to what will be on the show next week .
