March 25, 2020 – Winter Park, Florida
COVID-19 is sweeping the globe, so NXT more or less took last week off and this week they’re showing taped matches from an empty Full Sail Arena. Good to see they’ve done the right thing and put up curtains blocking the rest of the arena so there are no empty seats shown. The show starts by saying that all of the matches scheduled for Takeover: Tampa will take place over the coming weeks on NXT TV. But since only one Takeover match was announced, they don’t tell us what those will be. Not much to get excited about.
Austin Theory def. Tyler Breeze
There was a lot of stalling and chinlocks in this, and with nobody in the building making any noise that was really glaring. Points to Theory for talking trash to cover up the sound of the building’s air conditioning system. Things got a bit more interesting after the commercial break, but then the finish really didn’t work. Theory grabbed a cell phone and started filming a video while going for his finisher, but Breeze escaped and caught him with the Beauty Shot at 10:08. With silence in the background, the silly finish made Theory look like a goof rather than just a cocky ass. **¼
Killian Dain def. Tehuti Miles
Miles debuts here as if he’s not going to just be a jobber, but Dain gives him the jobber treatment nonetheless. Dain wins in 3:44 with the Vader Bomb. Kinda boring. N/A
Cameron Grimes def. Tony Nese
This was short and dense with action and the exact kind of match that this environment needs. They hit each other hard and didn’t waste time doing anything unnecessary. Grimes won with the Cave In at 5:38. **½
Io Shirai def. Aliyah
Xia Li was supposed to be in this match, but she was attacked and injured backstage. Shirai took Li’s place and earned a spot in the contender ladder match with her win here. Total squash here as Shirai wins in 1:22 with the moonsault. N/A
Dexter Lumis is coming. Sucks for us.
Keith Lee comes out for a gab sesh. He wants to apologize for attacking Dominic Dijakovic two weeks ago, as he did indeed think he was the one who attacked him. Dijakovic comes out and says to keep the apology and give him another title shot. Damian Priest came out and went for another attack on Lee, but Dijakovic saved Lee. Then Dikajiovic dove onto both guys. They announce that the triple threat match for the title will happen next week.
Adam Cole checks in from his backyard. He recites the firsts he’s achieved: first NXT WarJames winner, first NXT North American Champion, and the longest reigning NXT Champion of all time. He doesn’t think Velveteen Dream deserves a title shot, but he can have a match with Bobby Fish as a consolation prize. I love a good on-location promo.
Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. Shane Thorne & Brendan Vink
Commentary was recorded in a studio for this show, as the Australians’ Raw match is referenced, which happened after these matches were taped. Very happy to see Vink aligned with Thorne, and just wish they’d given them a promo before the match. Tag team wrestling is inherently more suited to an empty arena because the dudes on the apron make some noise. This was fun while it lasted, even if I’m bummed that Thorne and Vink were used as cannon fodder. Lorcan and Burch caught them with stereo submissions at 3:42. **¼
Candice LeRae def. Kayden Carter
This wasn’t much of anything. Carter is still pretty shaky out there and it’s much more noticeable without cheer getting her geared up. LeRae won in 3:29 with the GargaNo Escape. *¾
Matt Riddle def. Roderick Strong
Pete Dunne’s absence is glanced over, but what’s actually happened is he got stuck in the UK before the travel ban. This was pretty dope. These two are ridiculously good and had a nice, abbreviated version of their Takeover: XXV match with a finish that played off of Riddle knowing Strong even better now. He won with the Bro Derek in 10:50. After the match, Riddle is attacked by Saurav Gurjar and Rinku Singh. Malcolm Bivens comes out to acquaint himself with his old friend Riddle and admits that attacking Riddle while Dunne was away would be perfect. This was done quickly and efficiently and I liked all of it. ***½
Triple H comes to the ring and says little before Tommaso Ciampa joins him. I wonder if these guys know that their beards will make protecting masks completely useless. Triple H says there can be no violence between him and Johnny Gargano tonight. Gargano comes out and again goes over how much he thinks Ciampa sucks. Triple H says this has to end, and Ciampa and Gargano agree. Gargano says he’ll be ready in two weeks. Triple H says they can have an empty building with a ring and a referee and then the issue is over. No stipulation and nothing at stake officially. Then the Killer Kross video plays on the big screen and we actually see Killer Kross on the screen. Then the show ends. Umm, okay then. This didn’t do anything for me.
