Live from the WWE Performance Center, as the world is ending but that’s unrelated to Full Sail University’s prior commitment.
Keith Lee def. Cameron Grimes {NXT North American Championship Match}
This was really slow for most of the run. The last couple of minutes were fun, but it didn’t do much to make Grimes stand out as special. Lee won in 8:24 (shown) with the Supernova. Damian Priest attacked Lee from behind after the match. Dominik Dijakovic made the save. Lee attacked Dijakovic, perhaps because he thought it was Dijakovic who attacked him. **½
Mia Yim def. Dakota Kai
So the Kairopractor, a great move, is now just another move that everyone kicks out of. Raquel Gonzales looked like a dope here, distracting the referee when Kai had a roll up on, and then distracting her girl Kai long enough for Yim to hit Protect Ya Neck for the win at 6:14 (shown). Woof, 50-50 booking is destroying all of Kai’s momentum. The match was fine I guess, but the booking was awful. Gonzalez beats up Yim after the match, but then Yim gets up a couple minutes later and walks out just fine on her own. What is going on here?! Yim qualified for the Takeover ladder match with this win, if that show happens. **
Now the alleged Killer Kross video has a foreign language (Russian maybe?) at the beginning of it. They once again play it twice during the episode.
Kushida def. Raul Mendoza
This was a blash of a lucha sprint. Kushida won in 4:00 with a cross armbreaker. I could have watched many more minutes of this and hope they do something with Kushida now. Later on, random luchadors kidnapped Mendoza in the parking lot in a scene straight out of Lucha Underground. Mia Yim was there and did nothing about it. ***
Austin Theory approached Tyler Breeze, mentioned that he watched Breeze on Breaking Ground when he was in high school as a way of telling Breeze that he never made it big. Breeze called Theory a flash in the pan. I’m down to see this match.
Rhea Ripley came out to talk about Takeover, and was quickly joined by Charlotte Flair. Flair said that Ripley was doing too much, too quickly, and that she wasn’t ready. Flair attacked Ripley and put her in the ringpost figure four. Cool stuff. I wonder if and where WrestleMania will happen.
They show a video of WALTER’s dominance, followed by Finn Balor and his passport as he’s getting ready for his NXT UK debut the next day. The NXT UK spoilers sure made it seem like they build to both Takeover: Tampa and Takeover: Dublin, and given travel restrictions I’m fascinated to see how they handle reconciling all of the pre-recorded footage.
Tegan Nox def. Deonna Purrazzo
Purrazzo looks… different. I’ll just leave it at that. Nox was on defense for a couple of minutes and then won with the Shining Wizard at 2:28. This was pretty much nothing. Nox qualifies for the Takeover ladder match. *¾
Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne def. Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Before the main event, Velveteen Dream says that he never cared about Roderick Strong and he only put Strong’s family on his tights to get in Strong’s head and get closer to Adam Cole and the NXT Championship. Cole told Dream that purposely losing a cage match didn’t earn him a shot at the title and that he’d be having a celebration to honor becoming the longest reigning champ of all time next week. As for the match. The bits of Takeover energy that this lacked were buffered by some fun comedy in the middle, with the Broserweights busting out some Latino Heat style cheating to get Cole and Strong sent to the back. The Grizzled Young Veterans tried to interfere, though to what end is never explained. Like, what interest did they have in the Undisputed Era being champs? Or were they trying to get the match thrown out? If so, they didn’t do a great job of it. Anyway, the interference leads to nothing and the champs win with the Riddle End at 14:07 (shown). ***½
Tommaso Ciampa comes to the ring because he wants to fight Johnny Gargano. Gargano pops up on the big screen elsewhere in the PC, saying that he attacked Ciampa because he’s furious that everyone treats him like a hero because he was injured for six months, even though before he left he was the worst person in the history of NXT. Ciampa tracks him down and they brawl all over the building, destroying tons of stuff. The fight ends with referee Drake Wurtz being taken out and Ciampa hitting Gargano with an Air Raid Crash from a balcony through the announce table. Mauro Ranallo screams that we still don’t know why Gargano broke bad, but he’s explicitly said why two weeks in a row now. That’s annoying. The brawl was cool, if a little long.
