NXT UK 85

February 27, 2020 – York, North Yorkshire

Zack Gibson & James Drake def. Primate & Wild Boar
That red eye from Florida must be kicking the Grizzled Young Veterans’ ass right now. I wonder how it might impact their performance here. The Hunt, especially thanks to Primate, is a lot of fun. And the GYV communicate outwardly in a way that I wish other teams would too. Or maybe I don’t wish that, as it makes the Veterans special. I do wish they’d do more of the little things they did here in their Full Sail matches. They hit Primate with the Ticket to Mayhem at 9:50 for the win. Best showing from the Hunt thus far. ***¼

RIdge Holland gets a video package. It’s really just him pointing his stick at the camera. This gimmick is not good and doesn’t match Holland’s style.

Kassius Ohno def. Jack Starz
This was a mat-based squash that ended at 5:02 when Ohno put on the Kassius Clutch. Starz got a couple shine spots, and this was at least a different format from most squishy squashes on this show. **

Isla Dawn thinks the UK women’s division is very strong. She’s going to fight Aoife Valkyrie after being impressed by her in their debut. Dawn just sleep walked through that promo. At the Performance Center, Travis Banks asks for a match against Alexander Wolfe.

A-Kid def. Brian Kendrick
Kid escaped the Bully Choke and hit backflip DDT for the win at 6:36 for the win. I saw someone on Twitter post a clip of Jack Evans hitting a similar version of the move recently, but Kid and Kendrick just executed it far better. That’s impressive. This was solid, if not mind-blowing. It’s good to see Kid getting a win. **¾

Dave Mastiff is more than prepared for WALTER next week. He’s better than WALTER and NXT UK deserves him as champion. He hates what WALTER stands for (greed and want), and Mastiff stands for desire. It’s time for a proper British heavyweight to be champion.

Kay Lee Ray def. Toni Storm {NXT UK Women’s Championship I Quit Match}
In a total coincidence, other projects I’m working on led to me seeing the Rock vs. Mankind and Sexy Star vs. Mariposa I Quit matches recently, and I’m really digging on the stipulation right now. I think they goofed not having the referee have a microphone here. The passionate things wrestlers say while denying to quit is the best part of this stip. Most of the match is pretty solid. They tease an homage to Royal Rumble ‘99, but Storm cuts that off with a headbutt. Instead of hitting chairshots to the face with Storm’s hands bound, KLR Pillmanizes Storm’s neck and then does it again off of the ropes as Sid Scala, Johnny Saint and Piper Niven come out to ask KLR to stop. KLR threatens to do it off the top so Storm tearfully quits at 12:55. That finish took the steam out of the match, and didn’t really give us anything that we didn’t get out of their match in Cardiff (Storm’s emotions and fear keeping her from winning). Niven checks on Storm as the show comes to an end. Storm won’t get another shot at the title as long as KLR is champion. ***
