NXT UK 84

February 20, 2020 – York, North Yorkshire

Tyler Bate def. Joseph Conners
At this point, I don’t believe that Bate is capable of having a bad match. Even Conners’ rest hold couldn’t keep this match from rockin’ and rollin’ for long. They even managed to give Conners a run of rapid offense and an incidental chair shot so that we could almost believe he might win. Almost, but not quite. I especially liked that they shoehorned a nice backstory into this, where Conners channeled a year of bitching and moaning into Bate, who he saw as the young upstart that took his place in the first UK title tournament and got the career that rightfully belonged to himself. Bate then just decided out of nowhere that he’d had enough and hit the Tyler Driver ‘97 for the win at 11:40. Bate is a wrestlegod. Could have done with a more interesting finish, but as far as Conners matches go it’s one of two quite good ones I’ve ever seen, so I don’t want to quibble too much. ***½

We get some hype for the Women’s Championship I Quit Match. It’s happening next week. Earlier today, WALTER and Dave Mastiff signed a contract for an NXT UK Championship match for two weeks later. WALTER says Mastiff is getting the title shot as a favor. He calls himself the best heavyweight in Europe. Short n’ sweet n’ just shy of pointless.

Jinny jumps up on the commentary table and calls Jazzy Gabert her “previous” associate, gone from NXT UK for having disobeyed her. She’ll do it all herself now. No one interrupts, but Noam Dar comes out right after for his match. And then we get the requisite 10am start time for next week’s show because the Saudi PPV is on that day.

Jordan Devlin says that NXT UK General Manager Johnny Saint has asked him to come back to NXT UK. Devlin isn’t coming back now, but he’ll return when he’s good and ready.

Noam Dar def. Josh Morrell
The lady ref here is the same height as Dar. I’m also quite attracted to her. Dar won with the Nova Roller at 5:31 after a spirited but ultimately forgettable squash. N/A

The Hunt are offended by the Grizzled Young Veterans promo last week. This lasted about one minute, was a total throwback to a crazy ‘80s tag team promo, and was perfect. The Hunt and the GYV fight next week.

Ilja Dragunov def. Joe Coffey
They did a decent job with the hype video for this match at the top of the show, which is good because this is technically the main event of NXT’s entire first decade. They really beat the doodie out of each other here. There was a moment where Coffey’s lariat was stronger than Dragunov’s, and that’s just a great spot you never really see outside of Japan. Early on, Coffey targeted Dragunov’s leg, which led to a great finish. Dragunov had to attempt multiple times to hit the coast to coast before he could connect with it. When he finally did, he was slow to get to his feet and Coffey had time to recover. But Coffey in his anger and pride went for All the Best for the Bells, a move that takes too long to execute, and Dragunov was able to connect with Torpedo Moskau first and get the win at 14:53. After the match, Gallus rushes in with intent to attack, but Coffey holds back Wolfgang and his brother because he lost fair and square. He tells Dragunov that they’re square and heads with this firm to the back. This was such a dope angle, and both gets Dragunov over as a main event threat and helps Gallus look like stronger babyfaces in the end. ****
