Roderick Strong comes to the ring to complain that Velveteen Dream put his wife and son’s faces on his tights when he returned last week. He threatens to hurt Dream and demands an apology. Bronson Reed comes out instead to get revenge for getting attacked last week.
Roderick Strong def. Bronson Reed
I want an Australian stable with Reed, Brendan Vink, and Shane Thorne right now… but I’m willing to wait until after Takeover Tampa. Reed got a lot here. Strong was kept Strong by showing he was able to throw the big man around, but Reed controlled most of the match. That’s a win in defeat if I ever saw one. Dream pulled the lights-out distraction, but Strong persevered and caught Reed coming off the top rope with a knee for the win at 10:47 (shown of 14:23). Failing the Australian stable, I’d also accept Dave Mastiff coming over to the States and forming a tag team with Reed. After the match, Dream promises Strong that if anything ever happens to him, he’ll make Marina Shafir’s dreams come true. ***¼
The Broserweights want to bring their Dusty Cup to Portland, but they’ll never get it on an airplane so they’re taking a bro’ad trip. It’s incredible. Pete Dunne wasn’t used to driving on the right side of the road, and he doesn’t have a driver’s license, so they get pulled over. Matt Riddle freaks out because of course he does and their car gets impounded. Later on, the Broserweights find themselves on a paddleboat to contemplate how they’re going to get to Portland. Later still, Riddle has chartered a plane, but Dunne is skeptical of how he did it and hates Riddle’s fake British accent. Turns out that Riddle planned for them to stow away on Triple H’s plane in the cargo hold. This is more character work than they’ve put into anyone in NXT in forever.
Dakota Kai def. Candice LeRae
LeRae got a nasty nose bleed here. It seemed to knock her out of sorts early on, but after a commercial break both she and Kai were on their game. I would have liked to see Kai get a more dominant victory here (she won with a surprise roll up at 6:03 (shown of 9:34)), as she’s going into Takeover without much momentum. After the match, she goes after LeRae with the ring bell, but Nox makes the save and brawls with her. **½
Johnny Gargano def. Cameron Grimes
These two got into an argument at a house show earlier in the week, so we get this. They probably could have found a more interesting way to set this up. Or they could have just said NXT General Manager William Regal wanted Gargano to have a warm up match. These are nit picks, but a backstage argument at a house show isn’t compelling. All whining aside, Grimes made a good foil for Gargano here. Their styles aren’t totally dissimilar, and while it never felt like Grimes would win it was a fun ride along to way to Gargano locking in the GargaNo Escape at 10:03 (shown of 13:26). ***¼
Robert Strauss and Chelsea Green are ready to relaunch the Robert Stone Brand with a rematch against Kayden Cross for Green next week. Dream vs. Strong is also happening next week. Dream vs. Strong seems like it has enough momentum to carry on through Tampa, but what do I know?
Lío Rush def. Ángel Garza {Number One Contender Match}
I love a rubber match. This was the least of their three matches, but it was still plenty dope. I could watch these two fight every day. Garza dominated with a sense of brutality, but Rush was able to martial arts kick and fly his way to dominance a good amount of the time. He hit the Final Hour on the floor, but in the ring it was blocked. Rush was able to counter the Wing Clipper to a roll up at 7:05 (shown of 10:23). Jordan Devlin comes out and reveals that Rush’s shot will come next week. ***½
Mark Henry hypes Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic, because he’s an expert on big men. Smart move.
Bianca Belair def. Santana Garrett
Belair wins with the KOD in 44 seconds. Squishy. After the match, Belair complains about being overlooked so Rhea Ripley comes out to respond. She’s not looking past Belair, she’s looking at her, and she’s going to go through her. Belair replies with the KOD. N/A
Tommaso Ciampa cuts a wild promo on Adam Cole, and my key takeaway from it is that Cole is coming very close to being the longest reigning NXT Champion of all time. Ciampa doesn’t intend to let him get that accolade.
Adam Cole def. Kushida
Kushida was game, but Cole won this one clean with the Last Shot at 10:21 (shown of 12:51). Kushida is so much fun, I really hope they find something more consistent for him to do one of these days. Here he at least got one convincing near fall and an extended moment with his finisher submission on Cole. After the match, Ciampa comes out and stares down the champ. ***¼
