EVOLVE 144

January 18, 2020 – Fern Park, Florida

Joe Gacy def. Denzel Dejournette
It feels like they’re building Gacy up to be a challenger for Josh Briggs. This was very punchy-kicky, which doesn’t highlight Dejournette’s suplex style very well. Gacy won in 6:15 with a lariat. **¼

Brendan Vink def. Stephen Wolf
This was a good big man vs. little man match. Vink’s selling, which allowed Wolf to get some believable comebacks, was a little goofy. Still, I appreciate that he did it for the sake of the match. Vink won in 11:11 with a big boot. ***

Rik Bugez def. Anthony Greene
Bugez had Avery Taylor with him to counteract Brandi Lauren. Greene promised never to wrestle in Orlando again if he lost to Bugez. Not sure why they’d saddle themselves with that stipulation.  They kept this very basic. Late in the match, Lauren and Taylor got involved and Greene used the distraction to hit a low blow. That brought out Briggs, who choke-bombed Greene. Bugez then hit a splash for the win at 6:39. Greene attacked Bugez after the match. **¼

Joaquin Wilde def. Leon Ruff
Wilde worked heel here and did a great job of it. This was a really fun cruiserweight style match. Ruff has got the goods. I’m pretty sure he’s dating Aja Perera, who just signed with WWE as an NXT referee. Between that and his work here (and the fact that he did do a squash job against the Forgotten Sons on NXT TV recently) maybe he’ll get a look from WWE too. Wilde got the win with the Wilde Thing at 10:48. Wilde posed for a photo with a kid on his way to the back, so I guess he was just feeling competitive to the point of being a jerk during the match. ***½

Mansoor def. AR Fox
I’m surprised Mansoor didn’t pop up on an EVOLVE show earlier, since he’s easily the most recognizable Performance Center wrestler that doesn’t get consistent time on NXT TV. They tried hard here and put on a solid show, but there were issues with pacing and they lost the crowd when things fell apart in the second half. Mansoor got the win with a Falcon Arrow on the apron and a lifting rolling cutter at 15:07. It just went on for twice as long as it should have. I think I now understand why Mansoor doesn’t make it to TV more often. **½

Josh Briggs def. Dexter Lumis {EVOLVE Championship Match}
I’ve been dreading this one. Not sure what Lumis did to deserve this, as the match against Curt Stallion wasn’t sold as a contender match. Lumis did attack Briggs during his main event match the night before, but that doesn’t explain why this match was booked in the first place. Uch, I just noticed that Briggs has a bunch of DC superhero logos tattooed on his shoulder and I hate it. Maybe he’ll get signed and be the predecessor of the Hurricane. The commentators say the quiet part out loud when they ask, “How offputting is Dexter Lumis?” He is just death in there. There’s so little action in this match that Lenny Leonard gives a philosophical breakdown of the painting the Scream rather than try to call the inaction. Lumis kicked out of all of Briggs’ finishers, which kind of sucks since he probably won’t be back in EVOLVE after these performances. EVOLVE treats their champions like crap. Wake me when they put the title on Vink. Briggs wins after 15:39 of match time in front of a silent crowd with the choke bomb. **
