EVOLVE 143

January 17, 2020 – Ybor City, Florida

It’s an EVOLVE show in Florida, so a lot of Performance Center wrestlers are getting ring time on this show.

Joe Gacy def. Rik Bugez
Bugez is very over with this crowd. He’s fun, and does throwback stuff like Manhattan drops. Who doesn’t like that? Gacy doesn’t and he beat him with a discus lariat at 4:47. They kept it simple, and it worked. Kind of a bummer to have Bugez lose in the opener, though. **¼

Indi Hartwell def. Brandi Lauren
Hartwell had just had a cameo in a battle royal on NXT TV, but I prefer her cameos on Brendan Vink’s YouTube show Smug. I’ve got to hand it to the Ybor City crowd, they’re small but they’re really enthusiastic. At 7:25, this was unfortunately too long. Lauren was in control for a lot of this and it was a real slog. Hartwell got her ass kicked the entire match, then got a roll up with a handful of tights for the win and no-sold all of the damage after the fact. I did not care for any of it. *

Adrian Alanis def. Denzel Dejournette
Every match so far has started with Lenny Leonard on commentary saying, “If you talk to the coaches at the PC, they’ll tell you that X is someone to keep an eye on.” Get some new material, pal. Dejournette was impressive here. I’d be down to see him get a bit of TV time in an actual match, rather than just getting beaten up as cannon fodder by heels. He’s got the Jason Jordan suplex machine thing going on, so there’s potential here. Alanis hit an ugly GTS for the win at 7:21. **¾

Santana Garrett def. Avery Taylor
I like Garrett’s superhero shtick, which she was able to show off more here than she does when she’s jobbing in NXT. Taylor looked pretty green, but even still this held together a lot better than the earlier women’s match. Garret got the win at 6:11 with the Shining Star Press. **¼

Dexter Lumis def. Curt Stallion
Stallion has short hair now, which is an undeniable upgrade. Lumis is super boring. Everything he does is slow and he uses more rest holds than I’ve seen in NXT or EVOLVE in forever. Speaking of forever, that’s how long this match lasted. This is a guy I hope we don’t end up seeing on NXT TV again. Not good. Nope. No thank you. They went over ten minutes before Stallion got a comeback and livened this up a bit, and it was too little way too late for me. Lumis won in 17:24 with a terrible Kata-Gatame. I dunno, points to Stallion for trying, I guess. **

Brendan Vink def. AR Fox
Vink’s hair has been cut too, by Rhea Ripley on Smug. Fox was doing this weird wild punching thing in this match that looked really unconvincing and kind of like a joke. Other than that, this was a good time at the matches. They beat the crap out of each other here. Vink really abused Fox, kicked out of all of his signature stuff, and generally looked like a monster. He won in 11:48 with the turnbuckle Razor’s Edge. After the match, Vink runs down the Skulk just to be a dick. ***½
