NXT UK 79

January 16, 2020 – Blackpool, Lancashire

Joseph Conners def. A-Kid
It’s almost impressive how much Conners can suck the heat out of even the most enthusiastic crowd. From time to time they’d get into clapping for Kid or doing a snarky chant against Conners for a short time, but his matches never have a sustained crowd response. I’ve heard people complain that they don’t understand why Gallus gets pushed so hard, but I have no problem with that at all. I like it actually. What I do have a problem with is that they keep trying with Conners, despite his complete lack of ability to get over. He’s like Leo Kruger to me. Kid certainly tried to wow the room when he was in control, but he was rarely in control. There was a bit of slop in this too. Get Conners all the way out of here. The last minute was cool, at least. Conners won at 10:17 with Don’t Look Down. **¾

Quick hits around NXT UK: Trent Seven feels that he has unfinished business with Eddie Dennis. Imperium is going to speak next week. Ilja Dragunov will be in action next week as well. Gallus is feeling ecstatic after their win in the ladder match. Jazzy Gabert will fight Killer Kelly next week even as her relationship with Jinny seems to be falling apart. Toni Storm felt robbed of the title at Takeover, and she seems to be heading for a heel turn at Worlds Collide against Rhea Ripley. Sid Scala and Johnny Saint announce that next week there will be two matches to determine NXT UK’s representatives in the NXT Cruiserweight Championship match at Worlds Collide. Jordan Devlin will fight Ligero and Travis Banks will fight Brian Kendrick. No explanation as to why Kendrick would get this opportunity having never been on NXT UK before and he’s not even as British as Kassius Ohno. Speaking of Ohno…

Dave Mastiff def. Kassius Ohno
This had better get as much time as the last match. Mastiff has ditched his speedo for the singlet. This was a fun big boy battle, with a cute story running throughout wherein Ohno tried to out-wrestle Mastiff, who just wasn’t interested in Ohno’s whole “I’m Britain’s best wrestler” shtick. Mastiff hitting a super Finlay Roll was insane. He followed that up with Into the Void at 6:49. I could have done with a bit more of this, but they were probably trying not to do too much lest they overshadow the Takeover opener. **¾
