December 11, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida
Adam Cole cuts off the intro to complain about the main event contender match. He doesn’t think any of them have earned the title shot they’d be guaranteed next week. He hopes they destroy one another. It’s cool that he was in the production truck when he cut into the show.
Angel Garza def. Lio Rush {NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match}
This had a totally different vibe than their first match. Rush attacked before the match started and they came at each other with a whole mess of hatred. Does Rush usually hit the Deja Vu? Because he hit it here and it was great. I am not mad at all about the Cruiserweight Division becoming a part of NXT. So many great near-falls here. The final couple of minutes were absolutely insane, with Rush hitting a surprise Come Up and the Final Hour, but Garza getting out of the ring when Rush could only grab his tear-away tights. Garza then blocked a Final Hour on the floor, and then hit the Wing Clipper for 2 but put on a double underhook hold for the submission win and the title at 11:38 (shown of 15:15). ****¼
Shayna Baszler drives a ‘69 Mustang. She thinks everyone else in NXT is trying to be a Tesla. She’s classic muscle and they’re flashy, new, and won’t stand the test of time. She’s beaten Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, Mia Yim, Candice LeRaw, and the Raw & Smackdown Women’s Champions. Rhea Ripley’s momentum is good for nothing. Really good stuff here from Baszler.
Finn Balor resents that the newly relevant Keith Lee and the recently defeated Tommaso Ciampa are being considered in tonight’s main event as potential contenders. He’ll win and become champion. Okay but who cares because then right after that we see that Garza proposes to his girlfriend in the ring after his title win. Doesn’t Lio Rush have to harass her somehow to get revenge on Garza and get a title rematch now?
Raul Mendoza def. Cameron Grimes
Grimes attacked Kushida at the Performance Center last night, so he’s making a lot of enemies. Kushida came out and distracted Grimes, sort of, giving Mendoza a hurricanrana win at 1:14. Kushida steals Grimes’s stupid hat after the match. *
Travis Banks def. Jaxson Ryker
This is another Worlds Collide preview. Banks looks like a bigger geek than I assume the NXT brass thinks he looks like. The way he runs just looks so… geeky! I don’t know how I didn’t notice it until now. Banks hit the Slice of Heaven for the win at 2:47, though Ryker kicked out immediately after. This was a surprising win and gave NXT UK a hard-fought victory going into the co-branded show. **
Dakota Kai def. Mia Yim
Kai won with a roll up after knocking Yim into the turnbuckle at 6:37 (shown of 9:59). This was a pretty good match, with enough high-impact action to keep the crowd loud. The crummy finish plays into Kai’s crummy character. Yim attacked after the match, hitting Kai with a back suplex off of a balcony onto a table. The spot looked really damned dangerous (Kai’s head bounced off the edge of a second table), and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Kai was all the way concussed. ***
Keith Lee is on a roll, and it’s going to be hard to stop him. His size and strength are going to put him over the top. Later, Ciampa says he’s going to win the belt back for Goldie. Winning the belt back for the belt’s sake… an interesting take.
Tyler Breeze & Fandango def. Sunil Singh & Samir Singh
Breezango are doctors this week. Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle are on the roster and off the show this week and we’re watching a Singh Brothers match on NXT? Anyway, these guys definitely all beat the piss out of each other, so I can’t hate on this match. My gut was to feel like this match was a relic of 2017, but then it was really just an enhancement match for Breezango, and a fun one at that, so maybe I should just get over myself. Fandango hit the diving legdrop on Sunil at 4:17. **¾
Rhea Ripley goes on the radio to hype her title match next week. They also show a video hyping her career to date. If she doesn’t win the title next week then they’re being subversive for the sake of it.
Bianca Belair def. Kayden Carter
Pretty much just a squash for Belair. She won with the KOD at 4:52. It’s clear that Carter can go now, but didn’t get the opportunity to do a ton more than get beaten up here. **¼
Finn Balor def. Tommaso Ciampa & Keith Lee {Number One Contender Triple Threat March}
Cole was at ringside for this match but never interfered. At one point, Mauro Ranallo said that Ciampa was all over Balor like a weighted blanket. I love that simile because I was once almost smothered to death by my weighted blanket. I bet Ranallo has been there. I also really loved Lee kicking out on instinct when he was on the mat and the ref was counting, even when he wasn’t the one being pinned. There was actually a ton to love in this match. They almost never relied on two-in-one-out nonsense, kept the story centered on Lee’s mass and momentum, and generally kept their balls firmly pressed against the proverbial wall. There was a lot of good action that happened during the second commercial break’s picture-in-picture, and it’s bumming me out that so many people won’t see it. Lee dominated so much that it signalled to me that he wouldn’t win, and I think that’s the right call. Balor should get the title shot and Johnny Gargano should return and cost him the win. It’s too soon for Lee to lose the big one, and the title ain’t changing hands next week. Yes Lee took the fall here, but Balor had to sneak his way to the win when he hit the Coup de Gras right after Lee had hit Ciampa with the Spirit Bomb, getting the win over Lee at 12:09 (shown of 18:11). Cole and Balor stare at each other as the show comes to an end. ****
