EVOLVE 141

December 6, 2019 – Livonia, Michigan

Brendan Vink def. Colby Corino
I’d been looking forward to see what Vink is all about. I’ve really enjoyed Smug and Total Flogs (his YouTube shows), so I already know the dude can talk. He’s got a few weird big man mannerisms and his butt sticks out so far he looks like Baby Huey(not shaming, just noticing the posture), but he moves around with a lot of agility. I’m confident the heel Australian stable (with Bronson Reed and Shane Thorne) could work with Vink as the cocky leader. Maybe I should hold off on this ruling until after I see a few more matches, but I’m gun-jumping. For his part, Corino has gotten some nice definition and looks less like a fan and more like a wrestler now. He’s quite improved even from when he pulled a miracle solid match out of Kona Reeves. Vink picked up the win with a Razor’s Edge into the turnbuckle at 7:15. I dug this. Mr. Ruda comes out after the match with J-Rocc & Vipress to try to recruit Vink. Harlem Bravado, Anthony Greene & Brandi Lauren interrupt to woo Vink. Vink blows them all off and says all he wants is the EVOLVE Championship. **¾

Reina Gonzalez def. Shotzi Blackheart
This was fun for a couple of minutes, then they ran into some miscommunication issues, and then it ended with a boring disqualification when Gonzalez brought her cowbell into the ring but Blackheart ended up using it and getting disqualified at 5:37. They keep fighting after the match. *¾

Eddie Kingston, Joe Gacy & Sean Maluta def. Arturo Ruas, Anthony Gutierrez & Babatunde
The Unwanted booted Corino from the group before the match and attacked him (though he preemptively went after Kingston in a smart move to keep him from looking like a dope), which brought out the Performance Center boys (and Gutierrez). The commentators treat this like it was a scheduled match (I believe it was announced ahead of time), while the Unwanted treated it like it was impromptu. This match had a really nice energy and some good character moments for Kingston. Babatunde and Gutierrez got to do a couple fun big man-little man spots. In the end, the Unwanted picked up the win after Gacy hit Gutierrez with a sit out powerbomb at 13:47. ***

WALTER def. Timothy Thatcher
These guys did the thing that I’m sure they’ve done several times before when they’ve fought each other (I’ve heard at least a few of those times were in really good matches). While it never felt like they were giving the fans here a slummed version of their match, the style didn’t translate as epic in front of the relatively small crowd in the brightly- lit room. I think it also felt a little pointless, as neither guy was an EVOLVE regular at this point so it had exhibition vibes. Still, it was a good effort, a stiff match, and a level of professionalism that doesn’t find its way into EVOLVE at this level all that much. WALTER got the win at 14:13 with a short arm lariat. ***½
