November 10, 2019 – Brooklyn, New Yor
Reina Gonzalez def. Alex Gracia
This was a squash for Gonzalez. Gracia didn’t get a single move in. Gonzalez won in 3:46 with a lariat. She continued to beat up Gracia after the match and then she rips on the EVOLVE women’s division in a pretty solid promo. N/A
Babatunde def. Brandon Taggart
I guess they felt they needed to reheat Babatunde after he was in competitive matches against Eddie Kingston. Do people remember what happened in EVOLVE from show to show? Maybe I’m just old but I sure don’t. Taggart is big but he has a terrible, normal guy look. He didn’t get totally rolled here, but he did contribute to a match full of bush league nonsense. Both of these guys need a lot of work and they both need someone to guide them through a match because this was an amateur-looking crap match. Babatunde lifting Taggert up for a TKO was cool, I guess. Babatunde won with a second rope splash at 5:54. *¼
Austin Theory def. Curt Stallion
This is Theory’s final EVOLVE match, as he becomes the first male product of the company to graduate to NXT since the formal relationship between the two companies began. Maybe Taggart has a job to make guys like Stallion look more legit by comparison. It’s working on me. This was fun, with Stallion staying calm and countering Theory’s bigger moves, thus making Theory flustered and prone to making mistakes. Then the finish went ahead and sucked as Anthony Green came out to distract Stallion and give Theory a roll up with (with a handful of tights) at 9:30. After the match, Green, Harlem Bravado, and Brandi Lauren keep beating up Stallion as Theory watches from ringside. The Skulk come out and Theory has to walk by his old mentor on his way out of the company. ***
Arturo Ruas def. Eddie Kingston
Ruas’s buddy Anthony Gutierrez was getting beat up by the Unwanted before the match. This had its moments, but it wasn’t consistent enough to get the crowd’s attention and Kingston getting disqualified for hitting Ruas with a tiny wrench (at 6:29) looked ridiculous. Ruas chases Kingston to the back right after. The commentators ask how Ruas was on his feet, but the wrench was tiny! Sigh. **
Shotzi Blackheart def. Allysin Kay
This was billed as Blackheart’s final EVOLVE match, as she was set to be Theory’s female counterpart. Blackheart came in as the SHINE midcard champ, and Kay as the main champ. Gonzalez was on commentary during the match. I liked this quite a bit, though Kay’s selling is a bit more deer-in-headlights than it is wrestler-in-ring. Blackheart won in 9:34 with a diving senton. Gonzalez doesn’t attack Blackheart, so I’m not sure what it was that brought Blackheart back to EVOLVE for her feud with the tall woman. ***
Update: There was a backstage interview that they released on Twitter where Gonzalez demanded that Blackheart say that she runs the EVOLVE women’s division now that Blackheart is leaving. Blackheart wouldn’t do it so they brawled. Blackheart shouted that she was coming back just for Gonzalez.
