EVOLVE 139

November 9, 2019 – Queens New York

Shotzi Blackheart def. Reina Gonzalez
This was short, but one awkward spot aside it was very intense and a lot of fun. Gonzalez basically beat the piss out of Blackheart for three minutes. Blackheart started to come back, which immediately set off Gonzalez who hit her with a bull rope and got disqualified at 4:12. Gonzalez says she’s not going to let Blackheart represent EVOLVE in NXT while she’s standing in this ring. Feud ahoy. **¼

Joe Gacy & Sean Maluta def. Arturo Ruas & Anthony Gutierrez
Ruas & Gutierrez formed a mutual admiration society after their two MMA-inspired matches. I guess that also de facto turns Ruas babyface. Apparently Ruas has an underlying issue with the Unwanted but I can’t remember where that came from. Maybe it’s as simple as it’s the Unwanted’s anti-Performance Center thing. This was a fine, traditional tag team match with the MMA boys fighting hard and the Unwanted cheating where they could. In the end, Gacy hit a low blow and a discus lariat on Gutierrez for the win at 7:24. Eddie Kingston attacked Ruas after the match. **¼

Babatunde def. Eddie Kingston
This is under relaxed rules, so a blatant low blow was going unpunished is the only thing that differentiated this from the last match they had. That’s not fair, this actually picked up a bit down the stretch. Babatunde won with a splash at 7:24, which was done more intensely than a splash earlier in the match so they built a bit of drama. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the end of the Babatunde vs. Unwanted feud, so it’s weird that the big man won clean. **

Josh Briggs def. Austin Theory {EVOLVE Championship Match}
If anyone interfered they’d be banned from EVOLVE, which I suppose was meant to keep Kassius Ohno (who wasn’t booked for these shows) out. Harlem Bravado & Anthony Greene attacked Briggs before the match started (loophole), I suppose to give him people to feud with after winning the title. After a bad beating, Briggs demanded they ring the bell, so Theory ran in and hit Ataxia. It only got 2 and the match began with Briggs fighting at a bad deficit. Then this became a finisher spam match. Theory hit Ataxia multiple times but Briggs always kicked out. Briggs hit his chokebomb a bunch, and eventually that did the trick and won him the title at 5:57. I kinda hated it, but the crowd dug it so clearly they know their audience. **

Theory tried to leave with the title, but Malcolm Bivens grabbed it from him on the ramp and gave it to Briggs. He names a bunch of NXT wrestler who have held the EVOLVE title before and tells Briggs to live up to the legacy. Actually, a couple of the guys he mentioned were never EVOLVE Champion, but whatever who cares it’s just EVOLVE.
