NXT 522

August 21, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida

The Undisputed Era starts the show. Adam Cole calls himself the greatest NXT Champion to ever live, which would have been a great time for Tommaso Ciampa to come back. The rest of the group says they got screwed at Takeover; Roderick Strong because Velveteen Dream stole is fall in the triple threat match and the tag title match ended when Kyle O’Reilly was pinned without being the legal man. Jordan Myles comes out to cash in on his championship opportunity. Cole makes fun of him and says he should go after any other title but his, even a women’s title. Myles challenges him anyway, throws up a pair of deuces and heads to the back. That was pretty effective.

Bronson Reed talks about being a thicc boi when he’s approached by Shane Thorne, who is still sore about the Breakout Tournament happening and even more sore that the Aussie that he helped bring to NXT didn’t win the thing. They’ll fight later tonight, and I believe this is the first match they’ve ever had against each other despite coming up together in Australia and Japan.

Damian Priest def. Mansoor
I still hate that Priest is using the Roll of the Dice as his finisher, but this was an otherwise one-sided match for Priest. Mansoor got a few fun hope spots in too. **¼

Mia Yim def. Vanessa Borne
Yim isn’t over and Borne isn’t good (though she sold the hell out of Yim’s Protect Ya’ Neck finisher). Borne controlled almost all of this, so even at two minutes it was pretty dull. Shayna Baszler comes out after the match and offers Yim a spot in the Horsewomen on the back of her performance at Takeover. Yim declines and gets beat up. N/A

They hype the long-awaited Keith Lee vs. Dominik Dijakovic rematch. It might have been a good idea not to have Priest beat Lee recently if they wanted to push this as a big bout, but the video was effective nonetheless.

Shane Thorne def. Bronson Reed
This was a solid little bit of business. Reed’s power moves and aggressive grunting are a lot of fun. Thorne won with a killer Shining Wizard. Full Sail doesn’t really care about these Australians, but hopefully they will soon because I like them and I’d like them to get some noise. **½

Velveteen Dream comes out to shill some merch. He tells Strong that he can have a one-on-one title shot, but he’ll need to give him a new experience first. This guy is just gold.

Killian Dain def. Matt Riddle
Wow, they’re really putting Dain over Riddle in a big way. This started out a bit slow but turned into a hell of a brawl. Riddle got to show off his strength, having little trouble hitting all his big moves on the much larger Dain, but then Dain just destroyed him on the floor, on the ring steps, and then beat him clean with a trio of Vader Bombs. Riddle attacks Dain as the show goes off the air, but after brawling outside it’s Dain that comes out on top when he puts a ladder on Riddle and hits a senton. This is all pretty wild and I’m very curious how they’ll follow up. ***½
