Babatunde def. Joe Gage
Babatunde won by disqualification when Sean Maluta interfered on Gacy’s behalf. This worked pretty well as a follow up to the previous night’s Babatunde match. Whereas the big guy mostly steamrolled Colby Corino, Corino’s teammate Gage had a few more answers to Babatunde’s mass and momentum. Just as those answers were beginning to run out, Maluta attacked. This feud is working, and one assumes is leading to Babatunde vs. Eddie Kingston. **
Arturo Ruas & Austin Theory def. Josh Briggs & Orange Cassidy
Cassidy sticks out like a sore thumb here, as Briggs has legitimate issues with Ruas & Theory, making it odd that he’d pick a comedy wrestler as his partner. The internal logic of the match worked, as Cassidy’s comedy (which rules) only worked for so long before the heels beat the crap out of him. Briggs then found luck using Cassidy’s body as a weapon rather than a partner. Things got a little sloppy down the stretch, but the match was otherwise a well-executed tag match with a few unique moments. Sadly, I think the wrong team went over and the sudden finish (Ruas hitting the roundhouse kick out of nowhere on Briggs after Theory ran to the back) doesn’t move the angle forward as much as Briggs outsmarting Theory to win would have. Johnny Gargano comes out after the match to tell Briggs not to let Theory get into his head, because he’s more or less falling into the trap Gargano fell into with Tommaso Ciampa. He wants Briggs to get his head right and win the title. That’s neat. ***¼
Matt Riddle def. Curt Stallion
Yeah, this was good. I should probably learn to stop hating on Stallion for his weak look because I’ve yet to dislike a match I’ve seen him in. This was, as it should have been, quite one-sided. Things turned around for Stallion about two-thirds into the match when a fighting spirit German suplex exchange went from kind of goofy to really compelling, especially as it was the first time in the match that Riddle sold a move for Stallion. Other awesome things in this match: Riddle countering the Ode to Luigi to the Bromission, and the way Riddle caught Stallion with the Bro Derek. Riddle puts over Stallion in a big way after the match. ***¾
