NXT UK 51

July 10, 2019 – Donington Park, Leicestershire

Ilja Dragunov def. Ashton Smith
This is Smith’s first time on TV since March, so I expected him to be in full job mode. This was a perfectly fine one-sided affair (which Dragunov won in short order with his headbutt), and now it’s time to give Dragunov a real match against an opponent who we might believe could beat him. **

Xia Brookside is excited to get a one-on-one match against Jinny next week because it’ll be fair. Jazzy Gabert will definitely not interfere, no way, no how. Meanwhile, Nina Samuels interviews a fan and seems to be having a generally bad time at Download. That was dumb.

Toni Storm def. Candy Floss
I was expecting a total squash, but the match was competitive for a bit and they even threw in a bit of comedy for good measure before Storm took over and hit the Storm Zero. I quite enjoyed this. Kay Lee Ray beats up Floss on the ramp after the match while staring at Storm. **½

They serve up another Ligero video. This time he talks about his mixed record in NXT UK. He thinks the mask will help him turn things around. But he’s always had the mask so that doesn’t track. Later, Mark Andrews responds to Kassius Ohno’s promo from last week and says he’s going to prove to the big guy that he deserves his spot in NXT UK. They’ll fight next week in the main event.

Trent Seven comes out to cut a promo with his beautiful, perfect voice. He built NXT UK, and he’ll be damned if Imperium is going to take over. He’s going to cut the head off the snake and take down WALTER for taking Pete Dunne’s title and putting Tyler Bate in the hospital. He doesn’t want the title, he just wants a fight. I guess that’ll happen in two weeks.

Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey & Wolfgang def. Dave Mastiff, WIld Boar & Primate
Vic Joseph calls this a six-bearded brawl, which I love. Then Aiden English says there’s going to be a lot of beard in this match and I wonder why this clown couldn’t just leave well enough alone. This was a fun bit of business, as Gallus had the Hunt’s number as usual, but had a ton of trouble making progress while Mastiff was in the ring. Gallus won after Wolfgang ran through the ring like a hurricane, getting Mastiff on the floor and leaving Boar open for Joe to destroy him. It the story across while leaving room for Mastiff and Joe to have more to settle. The crowd didn’t appreciate the match, but I did. ***¼
