EVOLVE 130

June 30, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

JD Drake nc. Babatunde {WWN Championship Match}
I was starting to be impressed with how much these two were able to draw me in with the story of Babatunde having real trouble putting someone down for the first time. That made it all the more disappointing that Eddie Kingston & Joe Gacy ran in and ruined the match. Babatunde and Drake fight them off. Babatunde is still looking a little rough, but he was able to get through a pretty engaging little match (featuring a few fun chop/slap battles) without looking out of place. Later in the show, Babatunde tried to get revenge on the Unwanted, but Sean Maluta joined the stable and helped them beat up the big guy. **½

Josh Briggs def. Arturo Ruas
I’d been really looking forward to Ruas vs. Anthony Henry in their rematch on this show, but Ruas injured Henry before the match. That’s super disappointing, and makes me wonder if Henry might be hurt. Anyway, Briggs came out to sub in for Henry since his loss to Ruas the night before was controversial. This match was pretty much the same as the one they had the night before, just with a Briggs powerbomb finish in place of the weird submission finish they’d used previously. As a whole though, it’s less exciting to see a match the second time through its loop. **½

Tyler Breeze def. Anthony Greene
This took a bit to get going, and the finish kind of came out of nowhere (though that actually worked given the match’s story), but I dug the match they built once things got moving. Greene, with the help of Brandi Lauren in his corner, had Breeze fighting from behind the whole match. It was fun to watch Breeze try over and over to figure out Greene’s game, and rather satisfying that once he did he was able to put Greene away. Frustrated Breeze is my second favorite Breeze (after gorgeous Breeze, of course). ***¼

Roderick Strong def. Austin Theory
Earlier in the show, Theory said he only gave 100% in title defense matches, which would have to be true because he loses every single non-title match. It makes him a pretty weak-looking champion. This match let Theory shine a lot more than I’ve seen him be able to do to date. It was straight up better than his matches against Johnny Gargano and Raul Mendoza. It wasn’t as short as his match with Adam Cole, though it kept that kind of pace throughout. It wasn’t as overlong as his match with Kyle O’Reilly, though it weaved together just as compelling of a story. Theory was able to match Strong’s intensity for much of the match, and as things carried on it looked like Strong had worn himself out between this match and the battle he had against Henry the night before. But Theory just couldn’t help himself and he gave up his advantage to mock O’Reilly & Bobby Fish at ringside, and that was all the opening Strong needed to put the EVOLVE champion down. After the match, Strong rips on Theory and says that he’ll soon be the NXT North American Champion, and that Fish & O’Reilly would get the NXT tag titles. ***¾
