Io Shirai & Candice LeRae dco. Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shaffir
Shayna Baszler’s girls get their own entrance music. The Horsewomen actually didn’t look that bad here. Shirai got to look strong, using Baszler’s elbow stomp against Duke, drawing in Baszler and leading indirectly to a brawl that drew the double count out. **¼
Velveteen Dream is feeling good about himself. I like all things Dream but that didn’t really accomplish anything. Also Damien Priest debuts next week. The music on his hype video doesn’t feel like it fits what we’re seeing.
Kushida def. Drew Gulak {Submission Match}
This was terrific. I especially loved the way that they utilized what would normally be routines that ended in a pinfall to search for openings for a submission. Gulak got a little bit rolled here, but he’s not really on the NXT roster so it was the right decision to let Kushida look stronger here. After the match, Gulak finally shows Kushida respect. What a terrific little feud that wasn’t even close to the top of the card! ****
Aliyah and Vanessa Borne trash talk Mia Yim during a promo they cut on Aliyah’s cell phone. It’s better than they usual promo, frankly. Then they announce that Shirai will get a title shot in two weeks in a steel cage match, I guess based on the brawl after tonight’s match. Then they show Mansoor winning the battle royal in Saudi Arabia.
Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly
This had a lot to live up to as a rematch from my favorite NXT tag match ever. The circumstances here would never allow this to be as good as their Takeover match (smaller crowd, hinky finish) but damn if they didn’t put on a hell of a match just for kicks. The Undisputed Era dominated often by systematically dismantling Oney & Danny whenever the four were in the ring together, and it was just a joy to watch. Jaxson Ryker came out to the ramp and beat up security, distracting the Era long enough for the bald boys to get the win. That finish wasn’t great, and was the only seam on this show revealing that this was taped before Takeover. Luckily it only takes away from the match a bit. ***¾
