NXT UK 40

April 24, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

Kassius Ohno def. Ligero
Ohno is wearing a darkest timeline jersey, with black lettering on a black top. It’s just as goofy looking as his usual getup. Aside from a cool big boot spot that was taken right out of Infinity War, I got very little out of this. Ohno’s performances are directly in line with how hot the crowds are for him, and the Axxess crowd was lukewarm in its best moments here. Ohno screwed with Ligero’s mask before knocking him out with an elbow, so you’d think there’d be a rematch soon. There won’t be. **¼

Jordan Devlin will be facing WALTER next week. Devlin isn’t happy about it because it won’t be for WALTER’s title because they’re protecting the rematch with Pete Dunne. I’m with Devlin, this feels like a waste of a potentially great match. Hopefully they’ll put on a good show so we they can have another go of it in front of a british crowd. Also next week, the Hunt will have a match. Meanwhile at Axxess, the European Union rips on fans that wear novelty belts. The mat is sacred to the EU. That felt a little directionless.

Toni Storm comes out to the ring. She mentions that it’s WrestleMania weekend, which I hate because we’re supposed to be pretending that these shows are happening more or less live. She puts over women’s division in NXT UK, though she doesn’t mention Kay Lee Ray. I would have geeked out if Storm had mentioned that she has a match on Worlds Collide later today defending her title. Kay Lee Ray comes out and stares her down on her way to the ring for her match.

Kay Lee Ray def. Xia Li
Remember when there were multiple Steves and Chrises in WWE? Now there are two Xias. I didn’t see that coming. Lee’s little comeback here was fun, but Ray’s offense took up much of the match and it landed with a thud in front of these reticent-to-react fans in Brooklyn. *¾

Piper Niven thinks Rhea Ripley is a bully, and she has no time for her. I dig that there are two women’s feuds going on at the same time on this little brand. Meanwhile, the Grizzled Young Veterans have stolen Kenny Williams and Amir Jordan’s gear and say they’ll have to change somewhere outside the locker room.

Trent Seven & Tyler Bate def. Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews
This was a lot of fun; no surprise there. The finish was particularly gorgeous, as Webster got a little too clever and tried to trick Bate by going for his own Bop & Bang feint and then got caught by Bate and just wrecked by Mustache Mountain. The rest of the match was a good time as well, as the action never stopped and the crowd finally got off of their feet. Both teams came out looking really good here. ***½
