Worlds Collide: Cruiserweights Collide

April 17, 2019 – Brooklyn, New York

Last week was NXT vs. Raw & Smackdown, and this week it’s NXT UK vs. 205 Live. The commentary team is now Todd Phillips & Aiden English, and you know the commentary team sucks when it makes me miss Byron Saxton & Percy Watson.

Tyler Bate def. Brian Kendrick
They show a photo of a 16-year-old Bate posing with Kendrick in 2013. Neat. Bate’s tattoo is spreading. In the first half when this match was focused on comedy it was a lot of fun. When it wasn’t focused on comedy it was a lot less fun. They picked things up in the second half, and the finish really worked for me. Bate had a better showing in his Worlds Collide matches in January, and I think it’s time to give him something more substantial to do. ***

Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews def. Ariya Daivari & Mike Kanellis
Phillips doesn’t understand Webster’s gimmick, showing how incredibly stupid it was to have him do commentary on this show. Vic Joseph was getting a root canal or something? I don’t watch 205 Live religiously, but Jake Ziegler has led me to believe that these are the two worst representatives from that show. Kanellis is very over with this crowd, though. I have to say though, they held my attention more here than SAnitY did in what turned out to be their final match as a team on the last episode of WC. ***

Ligero def. Gran Metalik & Albert Hardie Jr. {Triple Threat Match}
Hardie was ACH on the indies, and I just don’t think AHJ has the same ring to it. This is also a rather fascinating place for him to be making his debut. He is the lone NXT representative on this show. There were spurts of fun here, but this match never came together as anything I’ll remember in an hour. I’m curious to see if Hardie gets on NXT TV proper anytime soon. **½

Jordan Devlin def. Akira Tozawa
As of when I woke up this morning, I’d rated 40 matches featuring Tozawa at **** or higher. To say I miss watching him on a regular basis is an understatement. At this point though it seems the Devlin has more upside on his show than Tozawa has on his, so giving him the win here makes more sense. This was a good time, with a few hard hits, a few gnarly drops, and fans that were really invested in Tozawa. ***¼

NXT UK comes out looking really good here, sweeping 205 Live and putting down Hardie in his debut match. Good on the Brits. Now if the crowd for the NXT UK tapings in this building could be as engaged as the crowd for this show was I’d be very happy.
