Velveteen Dream def. Buddy Murphy {NXT North American Championship Match}
Given how infrequently the titles are defended in NXT, this is a crazy fast turnaround for both this title and the women’s title later in the show. Murphy looks totally different than the last time he was in NXT. This one reached what I worried would be its peak about five minutes in, but then reached a much higher peak about ten minutes later leading into the finish. Dream clearly only has incredible matches, and Murphy’s offense complimented Dream’s style perfectly. It’s scary how good this was, as it barely seemed like these guys were breaking a sweat. The crowd was crazy for it too. ****
The Street Profits are going to talk to William Regal, but the War Raiders (in War Raider t-shirts that are probably collectables now) come out of his office. They tell the Profits that that they didn’t want to wait to be challenged, so these teams will fight next week.
Johnny Gargano comes to the ring to show off his new title belt. He only gets out a few lines before mentioning Adam Cole, which immediately brings out Adam Cole and ReDragon. Cole complains that he won the first fall, and if it were any other match he’d be champion right now. Gargano brings up that he made Cole tap out twice in New York. He also mentions the spat between Cole and Roderick Strong last week while making boy band jokes, and Strong is suspicious in his absence. Then Strong attacks Gargano from behind, allowing Cole to lay Gargano out with a superkick.
Some news: Kushida will debut in two weeks. Ricochet, Amsterdam Black, Lacey Evans, EC3, and the War Raiders (as the Viking Experience) were all drafted to Raw. Lars Sullivan and Kairi Sane were drafted to Smackdown. Heavy Machinery and Nikki Cross also got drafted to brands, but they didn’t make appearances on TV so they don’t get mentioned here.
Dominik Dijakovic def. Aaron Frye
Dijakovic’s white supremacist twitter gaffe doesn’t seem to be derailing his on-screen push, which is fine as long as they retool the gimmick to be less racist both on-screen and on social media. He wins in like 10 seconds here, then says that because his family immigrated to the United States, he wants the North American Championship. Dear Mauro Ranallo, Dominant Dijakovic is a bad nickname. N/A
Regal tells a celebrating Undisputed Era that Gargano has requested to face Strong next week, and he’s been granted that opportunity. Meanwhile, Aliyah & Vanessa Borne are mad that Candice LeRae won last week. Next week they want a tag match against her and a partner of her choice.
Shayna Baszler def. Kairi Sane {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
If Sane loses, she’s banished to Smackdown (or rather, she’ll never get a shot at this title again) . I have no doubt that this match was meant to air on a later episode, as Dream vs. Murphy was clearly meant to be this week’s main event. But with Sane debuting on Smackdown already and this being her final NXT match, putting this on last was the right call. This is the sixth singles match between the two, with Baszler up 3-2 coming into it. This didn’t recapture the magic of the inaugural Mae Young Classic finals and Takeover Brooklyn 4 matches, but it was better than their Takeover WarGames match. This actually had a lot in common with their match from Evolution, as just like that match it was going along really nicely until a crappy finish. Here, Io Shirai shoved Baszler to stop her from breaking Sane’s elbow, getting Sane disqualified. If Sane were sticking around we might get an interesting issue between them because of Shirai’s actions, but instead Baszler destroys Sane’s elbow anyway and sends her packing from NXT. ***¼
