NXT UK 38

April 10, 2019 – Coventry, West Midlands

Travis Banks def. Kassius Ohno
Someone at the tapings live said that this was the best match of the night, but I was pretty bored for most of this thing. Ohno just doesn’t do a lot for me anymore, and he controlled with a slow pace here. The home stretch was fun, and while I appreciate that they gave this a good chunk of time I was pretty tuned out for a lot of it. I also think a Rubik’s Cube Driver leading to a two-count in midcard TV match is really unnecessary. **¾

Last week, WALTER ended Pete Dunne’s insanely long title reign and became the third WWE United Kingdom Champion. The video recap of the stellar match is also stellar. Seriously, it is of the quality of the stars. Speaking of giant balls of gas, WALTER won with a Superfly Splash. Apparently there’s going to be a rematch, but Jordan Devlin wants a title shot.

Piper Niven def. Killer Kelly
I had to google Klondyke Kate because Nigel McGuinness kept talking about her on commentary during this match, and I’m more or less just bummed out at how that woman’s name is spelled. Niven got the requisite squash win here, though it wasn’t particularly exciting. After the match, Rhea Ripley runs out to attack Niven, but Niven is ready for her and Ripley retreats. I suppose the dull match was worth it for the subversive post-match antics. N/A

Mustache Mountain is stoked to go back to New York City for WrestleMania weekend (I hate when WWE Network chronology gets wonked up like this). They’re going to face Flash Mandrews in Brooklyn, I suppose next week? The Grizzled Young Veterans will also be in Brooklyn, much to the dismay of Zack Gibson who will have to miss out on watching some soccer matches while he’s away. The GYV will accept a non-title challenge from any non-American team while in the States. That match will definitely happen next week.

Joseph Conners def. Jack Starz
I kinda thought this match would end up on the cutting room floor, but they just keep insisting upon Conners. Oddly, the crowd is into the jobber Starz a fair bit more than they are in Conners. This was a boring extended squash, and with no post-match antics it’s more or less completely skippable. N/A

Toni Storm def. Jinny {NXT UK Women’s Championship Match}
I really liked everything in this match from the moment that Jinny hit her finisher and failed to get the win. From there, Jinny really sold her frustration and then allowed that to keep her from focusing. Storm’s comeback was really interesting, and the reversal of a headscissor takedown to a powerbomb transitioned into the Storm Zero was just dope. Most of the match leading up to that point was fine, if more or less unspectacular. This was a fine main event for what was essentially the leftovers of the last TV taping series. ***

Now let’s just hope that the WrestleMania Axxess fans were more lively for the next few weeks’ NXT UK episodes than the Royal Rumble Axxess fans were for February’s episodes.
