March 20, 2019 – Winter Park, Florida
Triple H comes out to start the show, holding the NXT championship belt. He wanted to announce the final battle between Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa at Takeover, but Ciampa needed neck surgery and he’s vacated the title. Gargano gets the title shot at Takeover anyway, but he needs an opponent. Ricochet, Amsterdam Black, Adam Cole, Velveteen Dream (who is VERY over) and Matt Riddle will fight tonight for the other spot in that match, which will be two out of three falls to make sure it’s decisive. The match is every current and former singles champion on the current roster, plus the undefeated Riddle. That’s cool and I dig it. All five guys cut little promos throughout the first half of the episodes.
Backstage, Kona Reeves doesn’t seem too bummed about not being in the contender match. The Forgotten Sons want Black or Ricochet to win tonight because that will make them distracted during the Dusty Classic finals next week.
We get a video about Ciampa’s surgery. They say it’s the result of wear and tear, which I think is a huge missed opportunity as they don’t tie it into the Gargano feud at all.
Kairi Sane and Io Shirai are willing to fight each other for the title, but it won’t hurt their friendship. Bianca Belair interrupts to say she’d have won last week if it wasn’t for the champ interfering. She shoves Sane on the way out.
Adam Cole def. Amsterdam Black, Ricochet, Velveteen Dream & Matt Riddle {Number One Contender Match}
This was more or less as insane as you’d expect it to be. There was a nice story being told throughout wherein every time Riddle got someone alone in the ring he dominated until Dream stopped his momentum. When he finally got Dream alone it led directly to the finish, as everyone came in to hit their finishers to stop that, and it was Cole who lucked out hitting the Last Shot to pin Ricochet while everyone else was out. This focused a lot more on Cole, Dream and Riddle than it did on Black or Ricochet, which makes sense as they don’t want tension between the up and coming tag team. Glad to see they’re making the most (Ciampa injury explanation excluded) out of a bad situation here. ****¼
