NXT UK 19

December 26, 2018 – Liverpool, Merseyside

Sid Scala starts the show by calling Johnny Saint out to the ring, but all Saint says is, “we take over.” It’s left to Scala and the commentators to explain that the first UK Takeover special will happen in Blackpool. I’m not convinced that Johnny Saint’s role in this show isn’t a Weekend at Bernies situation. Toni Storm comes to the ring and reminds us that she won the Mae Young Classic, thus deserving a championship shot of her choosing. She wants the NXT UK Women’s Championship in Blackpool. My instinct was to complain that she already lost in the inaugural match for that title, but then she did get to the finals of another tournament to get that shot. Okay fine she can have this one, which she asks for at Takeover. Saint is able to squeeze five more words out of his gut and give her the match.

Jordan Devlin def. Kenny Williams
Williams has Amir Jordan in his corner in a nice touch. Nigel McGuinness brings up his match against Daniel Bryan from ROH Unified in Liverpool. I like that match a lot, but it’s taken on a mythical status that I don’t think it deserves. As for this match, it’s decent enough. Devlin dropped Williams on his head a couple of times in spots that were probably too dangerous (even if they were totally safe) for a match like this. After the match, Devlin gets on mic and says he has a new target; someone he thinks is a big poser. **½

Rhea Ripley approaches Scala and Saint about the match they booked her in at Takeover. It takes her 7 seconds to say NXT UK Women’s Champion. That cadence is really annoying. She tells them to find her someone to defend her title against next week. After short makeout session, Scala and Saint say that Rhea can fight Deonna Purrazzo next week.

Eddie Dennis def. Dan Moloney
I don’t review squashes. This one lasted only a minute before Dave Mastiff runs out and attacks Dennis. Dennis wins by disqualification but runs from the fight. Moloney is mad that Mastiff cost him the match, so Mastiff lays him out. N/A

Next up is Liverpool’s #1 Zack Gibson’s guide to Liverpool. He shows James Drake the city while complaining that the fans in Liverpool turned on him during the last UK Championship tournament. Gibson’s promos play way better in front of a live crowd booing the hell out of them.

Tyson T-Bone & Saxon Huxley def. Tucker and Jack Starz
There are rumors that Tucker was released a couple weeks ago, which is a bummer if true because I like him more than most of the NXT UK jobbers, and more than anyone else in this match. Huxley and T-Bone aren’t connecting with the crowds and their matches are a bore. *

Jinny (thankfully) interrupts a bad Isla Dawn backstage promo. Jinny’s subsequent promo isn’t great either, but I’m more interested in the prospects of Jinny in the ring than I am with Dawn, so it’s safe to call this a level up.

Joe Coffey def. Ligero
Earlier on, Scala told Mark Coffey and Wolfgang that they’d be facing Mustache Mountain in the semifinals for the tag titles in two weeks. This is the second main event spot for Ligero. If he’s going to be the designated jobber to the stars for this roster he’s going to need to have more interesting matches with said stars. I do like his modified Shiranui. This was kept very simple, and crafted to make Coffey look very strong. This accomplished that. It’s just less impressive to beat Ligero than it is to beat Trent Seven or Travis Banks, so it feels like Coffey’s win streak is working in reverse. **¾
