Matt Riddle def. Punishment Martinez
This was the first time I’ve seen Martinez. They kept this pretty short, but I really appreciate that every single move in this match mattered. Riddle sold me with his debut match on TV, and now Martinez is looking good as well. After the match, Kassius Ohno sneaks up on Riddle on the ramp and knocks him out. ***

Ricochet is excited to find out who he’ll be defending his title against next. He won’t have to wait long, as he’ll defend next week against a yet-to-be-named opponent. Then my heart becomes full because Heavy Machinery makes it clear that they’re COMINNNN’ for the tag titles. Also, Bianca Belair beat Deonna Purrazzo in a match at a house show to qualify for a number one contender’s four way that will happen in three weeks to decide who will face Shayna Baszler for her title at Takeover: Phoenix.

Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler def. Raul Mendoza & Huberto Carrillo
“Nobody is born a Forgotten Son. You choose to be one because in the land of sheep, it’s better to be one of the savages,” -Percy Watson. Never has a phrase in wrestling tracked less than that one, and this is wrestling we’re talking about. Watson also says that Black and Cutler were a solid unit that’s even better now that Jaxson Ryker is there, which is fine and dandy except that they were never a team on TV without him. The match is thankfully a lot better than the commentary, if only five minutes. Carrillo & Mendoza packed almost as much into this as they did in their match against the bald boys a few weeks back, and the Forgotten Sons have quietly become a remarkably consistent team. Too quietly, as I don’t think about them at all unless I’m actively watching their matches. I’m really digging the tag team division these days, as there are five teams I’d like to see get a tag title shot with some serious time. **¾

Velveteen Dream is asked what’s next for him post-Takeover loss. Dream sort of hints that since so many people are talking about him in spite of the loss, he might be looking toward the main roster. I don’t see that happening, but I’m genuinely curious what they have next for him in NXT.

The Undisputed Era cuts one of their swanky backstage promos, but Adam Cole is worried about another ambush and he wants to make sure the doors to the room they’re in are locked. Bobby Fish isn’t worried about EC3. The tag champs brag about injuring the War Raiders (no timetable is given for Hanson’s return), but acknowledge that Heavy Machinery has been undefeated for six months. But they’re not Undisputed.

Shayna Baszler def. Dakota Kai
Baszler has Marina Shafir & Jessamyn Duke with her. I’m nervous to watch Duke’s upcoming in-ring debut, as it looks like she doesn’t have the best sense of what to do with her arms at any given time. I liked this a lot. It build really nicely off of their previous matches, especially in the moments that Kai looked like she might lose her nerve and succumb to Baszler the way she did earlier in the year. But Kai finally made good on her nickname and used really fun and in some cases unorthodox kicks to maintain the advantage for most of the match. I also like the Baszler won clean; I was starting to worry that her cronies would start interfering in all her matches and that just wouldn’t be good for her character. The MMA ladies keep attacking Kai after the match, but Io Shirai makes the save. ***¼

Tommaso Ciampa comes out to close out the show. He’s starting to get annoyed that people don’t believe in him, no matter how many people he defeats. He calls out Mauro Ranallo in particular for not getting behind him. Amsterdam Black interrupts, saying that he’s defeated and forgiven Johnny Gargano, and that he blames Ciampa for what Gargano has become. Then he invokes his right to a rematch, and he wants it at Takeover in Phoenix. Garagno comes out and says he’s not done with Black. Ciampa is very into the new Gargano. He stirs the pot, ensuring that the two of them fight each other (in a steel cage no less) before Black can have a title shot. Gargano and Black trade amazing barbs and lose their cool. Gargano ducks the Black Mass, so Black hits it on an unsuspecting Ciampa. Everyone seems into this steel cage idea. This episode fucking ruled.
