NXT UK 05

November 7, 2018 – Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

Dave Mastiff def. Damien Weir
There’s a cool camera trick that happens during Mastiff’s entrance where they make it look like every step he takes shake’s the arena. It would have been even cooler if the commentators didn’t call it out. I don’t review squashes, and this was a really short one. N/A

Ligero def. James Drake
I really liked the second half of Drake’s match in the opening round of the UK Championship tournament this year, to the point that it wound up being the best match at the Download Festival. This wasn’t as good as that, but each guy got to show a couple of their trick so it wasn’t a total write off. **¼

Toni Storm and Dakota Kai bump into each other backstage. Both want the NXT UK Women’s Championship. It’s a total trash segment, so I’m hoping their match next week is better. Zack Gibson, the guy cutting NXT UK’s best promos, cuts a promo right after which makes the ladies look even worse by comparison.

Aston Smith comes out for a match, but the Coffey Brothers and Wolfgang attack him during his entrance. Joe Coffey cuts a difficult-to-understand promo (because his accent is so thick) and the crowd calls it out. Actually, the best thing about the Cambridge crowd is how they just dig and dig at heels during their promos. Coffey rips on British Strong Style and says that he and his buddies will beat down everyone weaker than them.

In the back, Flash Morgan Webster and Mark Andrews want to talk to Johnny Saint about it. What, are they going to rat on them? Ashton Smith walks up and joins them, making it clear (thankfully) that the talk with Saint is about getting a match against the new heel stable. In a twitter statement, Saint says there will be a six-man tag match next week. It’s odd how little they use Saint on screen.

Eddie Dennis def. Sid Scala
The tall and lanky Dennis has been hyped up for a month, so he really needed to shine here. He looks like the British version of Eli Cottonwood. He even scowls like Cottonwood. This squash didn’t do anything to convince me that Dennis is anything more than a tall boy. N/A

Pete Dunne def. Danny Burch {WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
They devoted a full third of the broadcast to this match, which is nice. These guys bumped like mad for each other, making all the offense in this match look like gunshots. Other awesome things this match featured: wrestling that was stiff as hell, a dope pop-up headbutt spot, a draping DDT that made an incredible near-fall, a crossface segment that I’d buy as a finish if this match hadn’t been taped almost four months ago, a fired up crowd buying into all of it, and a really unique finish that made Dunne look unbeatable. They really need to give Burch something big to do either here or stateside. ****¼
