Meiko Satomura def. Lacey Lane {Quarterfinal Match}
I’d call this a waste of Satomura, but someone has to knock the completely out of her depth Lane out of this thing. I was really surprised that this wasn’t a squash, and I was even more surprised that Lane more or less kept up with Satomura. I’m just blown away that Lane was capable of having a good match. ***
Io Shirai def. Deonna Purrazzo {Quarterfinal Match}
This was what I’m going to call lesser Shirai. It wasn’t all her fault; she and Purrazzo had a few moments where communication wasn’t happening at a high level. The submission exchange near the end was very cool, but then the moonsault finish pretty much missed. I’d like to see these two give this another go. ***¼
Rhea Ripley def. Tegan Nox {Quarterfinal Match}
I’ve been dreading this match for weeks. Nox gets injured about twenty seconds into the match, completely blowing out her previously uninjured knee. Just tragic, but thankfully not visually gross. She’s visibly frustrated and the whole thing is hard to watch. Nox keeps trying to work through the injury, and honestly I’m kind of mad they showed this. Yes it makes Nox look legitimately tough as hell, but it also completely breaks the fourth wall. After a few minutes, the referee calls the match in Ripley’s favor. Here’s another thing: this makes the fake injury angle from the women’s match on the episode of NXT that streamed before it look even more ridiculous than it did before, and it looked very damn ridiculous before. But it’s the contrast that makes it just glaring that the NXT “injury” was garbage. I hope that Nox gets to come back next year, that she changes up her style to avoid injury, and that they give her a really nice run if she’s up for it. It’d get a hell of a response. N/A
Toni Storm def. Mia Yim {Quarterfinal Match}
This was an abysmal night for American wrestlers. Also, Storm must be exhausted from wrestling in two continents on the same day. Her weird posture is adorable. This took a bit to get going and then ended up being a lot of fun. The commentators telegraphed that the story would be about Yim’s injured hand, but Storm and Yim found creative ways to incorporate it into the match without being trite. So it’s Australia vs. Japan both semifinal matches next week.***½
