Mae Young Classic: Season 2 – Episode 5

October 3, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida

Toni Storm def. Hiroyo Matsumoto {Second Round Match}
Matsumoto put in a pair of really stellar matches in this tournament. This was a little looser than her match last week, but the finish – wherein Storm took everything Matsumoto had, lulled her into a sense of security, and then caught her with a roll up for the win – was incredible. Best match of the tournament so far. ***¾

Rhea Ripley def. Kacy Catanzaro {Second Round Match}
Catanzaro hits a goddamn Deja Vu in this match, which isn’t as smooth as Dragon Kid’s but it’s nothing to sneeze at at all. She looked really good here for the most part, with the exception of a botched springboard spot. I don’t understand why they didn’t edit that out of the match. Sure, she’s a rookie and it shows she’s inexperienced, but they ended up repeating the spot anyway and Catanzaro ended up back in control for a bit because of it. Strange editing choice for sure. I like what she’s about though, I think she has a big future, and she made Ripley look like a killer. **¾

Lacey Lane def. Taynara Conti {Second Round Match}
I don’t care for either of these ladies. I would have been fine in this ending in a double count out, allowing for the three quarterfinal matches getting more time. Life isn’t a dream though, so Lane goes over here. At least it was short. Conti cries after every match, win or lose, robbing the act of any emotional resonance. *½

Meiko Satomura def. Mercedes Martinez {Second Round Match}
You want to watch two ladies beat the shit out of each other and get the crowd all worked up for it? This is the match for you. This was the best showing Martinez has put in since she first showed up in a WWE ring, and Satomura continues to blow everyone’s hair back. ***¾

This was the best episode of the MYC so far, in either tournament. Next week has a lot to live up to.
