Mae Young Classic: Season 2 – Episode 4

September 26, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida

Hiroyo Matsumoto def. Rachel Evers {First Round Match}
Evers is Paul Ellering’s daughter, Lance Storm’s student (who her name honors), Kassius Ohno’s girlfriend, and she’s had a few undistinguishable matches in NXT and at last year’s MYC. Hiroyo Matsumoto is an Oz Academy wrestler. And what the actual crap, why wasn’t this aired as the main event of a previous episode? This was better than almost every match we’ve seen so far, and they put it on first? I’m very confused, but also very happy that these two went out there and put the hurt on each other. Wow. Miyamoto faces Toni Storm next, which could be dope. ***½

Taynara Conti def. Jessie Elaban {First Round Match}
I do not care for Conti. Both of these ladies are NXT trainees, so they’re really green. It feels like they’re going for a babyface version of the IIconics with Elaban. This wasn’t a disaster by any means, but Conti is still irritating and I don’t think we should be expecting much from either of these two yet. *½

Nicole Matthews def. Isla Dawn {First Round Match}
Dawn’s accent was thick enough that WWE felt the need to give her subtitles in her intro video. It was ridiculous. This was not amazing, or even good. The crowd was dead for it and I had a hard time not looking at my phone while watching it. *¾

Io Shirai def. Xia Brookside {First Round Match}
Brookside is Robbie Brookside’s step-daughter daughter and she’s 19. Shirai is legit a big deal, who I first heard about when she and her ex-boyfriend NOSAWA got caught smuggling weed into Japan. Turns out the whole thing was a crazy set up fit for a wrestling angle, but that’s a story for another day. She is all the way over. These two have wrestled each other once before in Japan, and I kind of expect they’ll just redo that match here. Or maybe not, because as fun as this was, Brookside got rolled in what was pretty much the only squash of the first round. It’s appropriate too, because somebody needs to look like a big deal in this thing. Shirai’s channeled peak-Muta, which I didn’t think I’d ever see in a WWE ring. **½
