NXT Takeover: Brooklyn 4

No more red notes on these things, I’m watching them live.

August 18, 2018 – Brooklyn, New York

Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly def. Trent Seven & Tyler Bate {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
How is it that people are capable of wrestling like this? There were moments in this match that I was sure that Bate’s teeth had been knocked out, and that Strong’s eyeball might have been knocked loose. The way they played off the towel-throwing spot from their second match had me jumping out of my seat. I’m a big proponent of having a solid end to a feud, which is what this was, but I would be fine watching just these two teams fight forever. I haven’t seen a match from any of them in months that was anything less than stunning. This was the best match of the feud, and the only thing that made it less than perfect was some of the near-falls as the end being beyond the realm of believability. The War Raiders attack the Undisputed Era after the match, and given how impressive they look I think this quality streak can continue. ****¾

Velveteen Dream def. EC3
I feel that while Dream is a hell of an athlete who has all the ability in the world, his matches tend to be a series of escalating moves with little flow between them. Having themes to his matches against Kassius Ohno, Amsterdam Black, and Ricochet covered much of that. The only theme here was that Dream wants to get called up to the main roster and that he doesn’t understand why EC3 would be mad at him for being self absorbed. Anyway, this was similar to his other Takeover matches to me, but missing the connective tissue that made the Black and Ricochet matches great. ***¼

Ricochet def. Adam Cole {NXT North American Championship Match}
I was worried at first that this match would have the same issues as the previous one, but these two started grooving together like you wouldn’t believe and had a ten minute stretch that had my arms over my head involuntarily. The final segment, in which Ricochet came at Cole from every possible angle to get him primed for the 630 senton was genius stuff. ****¼

Kairi Sane def. Shayna Baszler {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Welp, that was the best match I’ve seen from both of these ladies to date. There were so many moments when I thought Baszler had the thing all locked up. Sane is amazing as an underdog, which actually has me a little worried about how she’ll perform as champion. Here’s hoping they let her continue to be the underdog after a line of dominating champions. ****¼

Tommaso Ciampa def. Johnny Gargano {NXT Championship Last Man Standing Match}
First thing’s first, this was the best of the 3 matches between these two. Next, the one thing keeping it from being perfect was the same problem all three matches have had; the finish got too dramatic for its own good and disturbed the natural flow of the thing. But what made this so great, and honestly one of the greatest LMS matches ever, was the creative ways both guys beat every 10 count. Tommaso would roll to the floor (which won him the match the second time he did it) or use a crutch to prop himself up. Gargano would lunge to the barricade to get to his feet. I loved the near-fall in which Ciampa ran Gargano through the barricade and then buried him under plunder and a human being. The only doubt I had about that burial being the finish was the Checkov’s Table hadn’t been broken yet. Had that been the finish I’d have given this a perfect score just for being subversive. I especially like that, like their last match, this was more Gargano beating himself than Ciampa beating him. I’m here for this title reign. ****¾
