Lacey Evans & Aliyah def. Dakota Kai & Deonna Purrazzo
Wow, this was just really bad. It was the worst match that’s aired on this show in quite some time. Worse than anything I can remember, anyway. How is Aliyah still this bad? I mean, it’s not like anyone else was blowing minds here, but Aliyah is remarkably bad. ½*
Jaxson Ryker def. Humberto Carrillo
Carrillo is Hector Garza’s nephew. Ryker is a veteran, as is Steve Culter. So why the hell is Wesley Blake one of the Forgotten Sons? I don’t review squashes. N/A
Candice LeRae tries to implicate Tommaso Ciampa in the attack on Amsterdam Black. William Regal can’t find any evidence that Ciampa did it, but he suspects that LeRae’s husband might be involved. LeRae tries to provide an alibi for him, but it’s flimsy.
Ricochet nc. Pete Dunne {NXT North American Championship vs. WWE United Kingdom Championship Match}
Percy Watson mentions the NXT UK show, making me wonder if it’s actually going to air. Then Nigel McGuinness asks how the Yanks would feel if the North American title was held by an Englishman, to which Mauro Ranallo responds that he’s Canadian. Bruh, Canada is in North America, and he meant you too in the context of the conversation. Then McGuinness brings up his title vs. title match in Ring of Honor with Daniel Bryan and it just makes me love him so much. Another thing I love; the way the Ricochet and Bruiserweight chants melted into each other. Another thing I love; this match so much. Yes, it was the wrestling equivalent of the worst blue balls you could ever experience, as the build up and plateau were exquisit and then the payoff was completely and lazily ruined by a lame Undisputed Era run-in (and subsequent War Raiders save). But also yes, that can’t take everything away from the work that these two put in for over twenty minutes. Let’s do it again and give it a finish and I’d be willing to guess it’s in talks for the best match of the year.
Just to be thorough, let’s talk about the reasons this gets a huge rating even though there’s no finish. First, there’s Dunne’s go-to hand stomps and finger twisting, which put him back in control every time he was in trouble. Second, there was Ricochet’s desperate and successful efforts to avoid Dunne’s finisher at all cost. Third, although this was a Japanese strong style finisher fest of a match, neither guy ever hit their true finisher and thus (with the possible exception of the super Frankensteiner spot) none of the kick-outs felt unbelievable. I think we deserve a rematch, and I think it probably won’t happen until either Royal Rumble weekend or the NXT UK show if that ever ends up really happening. ****½
